Position Summary

Maintain, repair, and make minor improvements to the buildings at the Wahsega 4-H Center. Common activities include clearing clogged drains, replacing light fixtures, fixing broken windows, screens or doors, replacing heating element in hot water heaters, fixing / replacing wall electrical outlets, cleaning roofs and gutters, painting, etc. Maintain and keep organized tools to do these tasks. For occasional bigger jobs supervise contractors performing work at the center.

Perform general grounds-keeping and landscaping duties such as mowing grass, trimming bushes, cutting down trees, removing poison ivy, splitting firewood and driving recyclables to collection station. Maintain equipment for this purpose including lawn mowers, leaf blowers, weed cutters, chain saws, ATV , tractor and pickup truck.

Obtain Class 4 water operator license. Perform routine maintenance on Wahsega pump and well system. Test water for chlorine level and take quarterly water samples and deliver to testing lab.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and / or Competencies

Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, methods, and equipment of the various trades (carpentry, plumbing, landscaping, electrical) required. Skill in using tools and materials required by the applicable trade. Use common grounds-keeping and construction implements such as riding lawn mower, weed cutter, tractor, hammers, shovels, axes, chain saw, table saw, etc. Ability to work from diagrams, sketches, and oral and written instructions. Ability to work effectively with fellow employees. Ability to work on their feet doing manual labor for the entire day, climb and work from ladders, work with arms and hands overhead, bend at the waist and knees, lift and move items weighing 50 lbs.

Maintain, repair, clean and make minor improvements or repairs to buildings; procure and store supplies and tools for this purpose. Common repair tasks include : unclogging toilets and drain lines, fixing broken windows, fixing door locks, replacing lighting fixtures, replacing heating element in hot water heaters, fixing bunk beds, changing out HVAC air filters, fixing or replacing smoke detectors, fixing / replacing wall electrical outlets, cleaning out leaves from gutters, removing wasp nests, repair leaks in water pipes in crawlspace, mounting signs, checking propane tank levels and checking for leaks, etc.

Duties / Responsibilities

Perform general grounds-keeping and landscaping duties and maintaining equipment used for these tasks. Example tasks include : mowing the grass, blowing debris off all walkways, decks and porches, maintaining pond, trimming back trees and shrubs, using a chainsaw to cut down dead trees, etc. Equipment to maintain includes lawn mowers, chain saws, leaf blower, weed cutter, ATV , pickup truck, tractor, power washer, etc.

Adjust schedule to seasonal changes. Winterizing camp, opening and closing of camp, supervision of seasonal staff doing occasional "camp support work", preparing for storms and repairing storm damage.

Maintain drinking water system. Obtain water operator class 4 state license. Test chlorine level twice weekly and take quarterly water samples and deliver to laboratory. Maintain well equipment including chlorinator, pump, and tank.

Prepare, maintain, and stock firewood. This requires using a chain saw to cut down wood to smaller sizes to fit into electric wood splitter. Driving tractor also required to move large pieces of wood around.
