Job Description

This posting is to create a pool of qualified applicants for the current and / or upcoming academic year. While the department may not be actively recruiting at this time, applicants who meet all minimum qualifications and have submitted complete application materials will be contacted if a substitute position becomes available.

Job Description :

San Bernardino Community College District accepts applications for Federal Work Study, hourly positions for our college campus Crafton Hills College on a continuous basis. However, this does not imply the department is actively recruiting for this position. If there is an interest and / or need within the specific department, applicants who meet the requirements will be contacted by the respective department manager. Applications submitted will remain active for up to one (1) year. Student workers assist the staff with the following :

Student workers will assist in providing program related general support and assistance to faculty, staff, and students. Must have the ability to work with a diverse student population.

Position Summary :

MESA Mentors serve as enthusiastic and supportive peer leaders dedicated to encouraging academic success, community building, and program engagement among students in the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program. Mentors play a vital role in guiding new and continuing MESA students through their educational journey by sharing experiences, connecting them to campus resources, and cultivating a strong sense of belonging within the MESA and STEM communities at CHC.

Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Develop and maintain meaningful mentoring relationships with assigned MESA students.
  • Serve as a positive academic, social, and professional role model for fellow MESA students.
  • Attend and participate in MESA Mentor training, meetings, and professional development workshops.
  • Maintain regular communication with MESA students through in-person meetings, email, and campus events.
  • Encourage student engagement in MESA activities, workshops and other events and opportunities.
  • Educate students about resources within the MESA program and across the campus.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow mentors, staff, and faculty to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding any personal or academic information shared by students.
  • Notify the MESA Director, Counselor, or staff of any student concerns or challenges that may need additional support.
  • Assist with MESA outreach, recruitment and community-building events as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Students must be an active member and in good standing in the MESA program.
  • Students must have in possession of a Federal Work Study award letter for the current academic year.
  • Students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).
  • Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units,
  • Students cannot fall below half-time (6+units) during their employment under the FWS program.

  • Students must have a minimum of 2.0 GPA
  • Familiarity with various equipment / tools used in the program and / or have completed some courses in the specific program or related fields.
  • Physical Demands and Working Environment

    Environment : Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting.

    Physical : Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to occasionally lift, carry, push, and / or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 25 pounds; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

    Vision : See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment.

    Hearin g : Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

    Employment Requirements

    Time Commitment :

  • Approximately 5-10 hours per week to mentoring activities, meetings, and events.
  • The person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements :

  • Submit to and successfully pass DOJ live scan / finger printing. Cost of live-scan services to be borne by candidate.
  • Sealed official transcript(s) in envelope from institution or electronic copies emailed directly from institution (for positions with higher education requirement)
  • Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment.
  • Other pre-employment requirements may be required depending on the position (i.e. certifications or licenses; see job posting qualifications section for details).
  • Successful completion of all pre-employment requirements is mandatory to be eligible for employment. These requirements are in accordance with the San Bernardino Community College District's
