The NICU Registered Nurse provides specialized, compassionate care to neonates requiring intermediate and special care services. This role involves comprehensive assessment, monitoring, and family-centered education for newborns with varying levels of acuity. The nurse ensures safe and effective delivery of care using advanced neonatal skills and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to support optimal outcomes. This position is a 36-hour / week, night shift (3×12) role with every other weekend required, offered as an 8-week contract. Responsibilities
- Provide specialized nursing care to neonates in a Special Care Nursery / Level II NICU environment.
- Perform newborn assessments, monitor vital signs, manage oxygen therapy, feeding support, thermoregulation, and medication administration.
- Utilize the nursing process—assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation—to deliver high-quality neonatal care.
- Document patient care, progress, and interventions accurately and timely.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers.
- Provide education and emotional support to families regarding neonatal care, feeding, and discharge planning.
- Identify changes in patient condition and respond swiftly using sound clinical judgment.
- Assist in resolving variances from patient care goals and implement appropriate solutions.
- Maintain a safe and developmentally supportive environment for newborns.
- Participate in team collaboration, safety initiatives, and quality improvement efforts. Requirements
- Previous experience in neonatal nursing – Required
- Clinical knowledge and analytical ability to formulate and implement effective neonatal care plans
- Ability to perform a wide range of neonatal nursing procedures
- Strong communication skills for interacting with families and the healthcare team
- Ability to work night shifts, 3×12 hours, every other weekend Preferred : 2+ years of neonatal nursing experience Education : Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Required
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – Required License : Current Michigan RN license (Michigan State Board of Nursing) – Required
