Description of Job

About the Unit :

This position is located in CDOT’s Region 4 Sterling Engineering Residency. This residency provides project design, construction and materials support to Sterling and the surrounding areas. It ensures that projects which improve and maintain the transportation system within the Region are designed and constructed in a safe and cost effective manner, including materials utilized in the projects.

About the Position :

Under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, the Engineer-In-Training II applies and implements engineering theories, principles, and standards and will learn to oversee, direct, and review the work and documentation done by consultants on projects. This position will learn to oversee both design and construction elements of projects. This position will gain experience in inspection of project work, documentation of pay quantities, surveying on various construction projects, as well as training in the design aspects of projects.

Your major duties and responsibilities will include some or all of the following.

Under the guidance and supervision of a Professional Engineer performs the following :

Prepare and design complete engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates for roadway construction projects.

Assure quality and consistency of project design plans and procedures using good engineering judgment and a wide variety of design and construction manuals, spreadsheets, forms, design aids, computer software, and Department procedures.

Use engineering practices and calculation methods that meet CDOT and AASHTO guidelines.

Develop practical applications of professional engineering processes, theories, laws, principles, and techniques related to highway engineering.

Assist the project manager on design and construction projects to gain experience in all aspects of contract and project administration.

Attend review meetings to ensure that plan, design, and construction transportation projects comply with engineering and regulatory guidelines.

Individualize various existing engineering standards.

Analyze complicated data, breaking the problem or case into parts, examining these parts, and reaching conclusions.

Learn to document and approve progress and final contract payments due for work completed and accepted by reviewing pay documentation prepared by staff and by overseeing and checking cumulative payment reports and authorizations compiled by computer software application.

Conduct inspections of construction project work including field observation, measuring, and documenting work and quantities.

Test and inspect reports to decide on the acceptability of materials to incorporate into construction projects.

Participate during design / construction project oversight processes by inspection of procedures, documentation of work done, and methods used, documentation of construction activities, review of materials test results, completion of project diaries and coordination of inspectors and testers with work activities.

Initiate, develop and maintain effective professional working relationships with other work and / or specialty units within CDOT, as well as FHWA, governmental agencies, municipalities, utilities, and other entities involved at the project level.

Coordinate with consultants and local agencies (in coordination with their project lead) in completing their assigned tasks. This may include preparation of construction bid packages within designated time periods or prioritizing daily construction assignments required by the contract.

Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment :

Your schedule will be primarily Monday – Friday with opportunity for a flexible schedule.

After a training period, you may work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work.

Travel necessary for project related activities, site visits, meetings, trainings and committee attendance.

Required to work outside in all weather conditions, in close proximity to moving traffic, and over variable terrain.

Required to operate CDOT vehicles

Minimum Qualifications

Education / Licensure / Certification / Experience :

  • Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.

Substitutions :

  • Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors will substitute for the enrollment as an Engineer Intern.
  • Conditions of Employment

    A current valid driver's license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.

    Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks.

    It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training must obtain registration as a Professional Engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors within eight years of appointment the initial appointment to the position.
