What this job involves :
The Chief Engineer is responsible for operational management and daily leadership of the engineering team in Virginia, ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of all machinery and systems. This role demands the highest level of professionalism while meeting client needs and maintaining a commitment to achieving 100% uptime across all engineering operations. The position focuses on protecting and improving client asset value by ensuring building engineering systems continue to perform their intended functions through reliable maintenance practices. The Chief Engineer implements and manages reliability-based maintenance functions, executes equipment inspection and monitoring programs, and defines maintenance best practices to improve mechanical equipment uptime. The role requires continuous evaluation of current maintenance, operations, and reliability methods, implementing strategic changes to enhance effectiveness and maximize value-driven performance outcomes.
What your day-to-day will look like :
- Building Management involves overseeing all building systems maintenance and operations while supervising engineers and maintenance staff through comprehensive hiring, training, and development programs.
- The role requires active participation in client communications, property meetings, budget processes, and capital improvement planning alongside contractor scheduling and supervision.
- Daily operations include performing preventive maintenance, responding to emergencies, conducting weekly inspections, and managing CMMS and building automation systems for optimal performance.
- Technical responsibilities encompass diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and building surfaces while monitoring automation systems and responding to alarms.
- The position demands proactive facility management through regular rounds, cost-saving identification, exceptional tenant service, and strict compliance with procurement policies and safety regulations.
- Safety leadership requires hazard identification and mitigation, safety training program implementation, regulatory compliance assurance, and maintenance of all infrastructure documentation and building drawings.
- Training and development duties focus on expanding staff capabilities through hands-on instruction, proper tool usage demonstration, safety guidance, and fostering professionalism across all JLL and client teams.
Required Qualifications :
The ideal candidate possesses seven or more years of comprehensive facility-related work experience, demonstrating expertise in customer service delivery, leadership capabilities, and hands-on supervisory experience managing teams and operations.Managerial experience is essential, coupled with comprehensive knowledge of maintenance processes and a thorough understanding of construction planning and execution methodologies.Technical proficiency is required in HVAC systems, fluid handling and pumping operations, fluid filtering, mechanical systems, welding techniques, and electrical systems engineering and operation.Strong computer literacy is necessary, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for efficient work order and asset management.Excellent communication abilities are demonstrated through proven verbal and written communication skills, enabling effective interaction with diverse stakeholders and clear documentation of processes and procedures.A proven track record of delivering exceptional internal and external customer service is essential, showcasing the ability to maintain high satisfaction levels across all client interactions.The role requires experience operating within classified and controlled access environments, along with flexibility to provide overtime and after-hours support as operational needs demand.Preferred Qualifications :
Associate's Degree in an Engineering disciplineUniversal Technician for CFC's (or within 90 days of employment)Operating Engineers license (SMA) or equivalentLocation : On-site Reston, VA
