Key Responsibilities
As a Deputy I, you will :
Responding to calls for service, emergencies, and complaints, ensuring public safety and resolving issues.Investigating criminal activity, collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and preparing detailed reports.Enforcing traffic laws, conducting accident investigations, and providing traffic control.Serving warrants, subpoenas, and legal documents, and making arrests as required.Engaging with the community through public interactions, educational presentations, and proactive safety initiatives.Qualifications
A minimum of 21 years of age.High School diploma and / or GED.Must be a U.S. Citizen.Possess a valid Driver's License for a minimum of 2 years.Background Disqualifiers

Criminal History :
Any conviction or plea of guilty or no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in the Commonwealth of Virginia.Conviction of any Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanor, excluding traffic violations, within the last 5 years.Any conviction or plea of guilty or no contest to any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or offenses that would be considered such in Virginia.Any conviction or plea of guilty or no contest to any misdemeanor sex offense or related offenses in Virginia, another state, or the United States.Any conviction requiring registration in the Virginia Sex Offender Registry.Adult commission of undetected crimes of a serious or repetitive nature.Traffic Violations :
Three or more negative points on a Virginia Operator's License or equivalents; points may be negated up to 5 by defensive driving.Recent DUI / DWI or related offenses as specified (past 3 years for certain offenses; past lifetime for others).Active revocation or suspension of driving privileges in any state within the last 3 years.Other enumerated driving violations within the last 3 years including hit-and-run, reckless driving, etc.Two or more avoidable motor vehicle accidents in the past 3 years.Drugs :
Sale or distribution of illegal drugs.Illegal use of cocaine, heroin, or other listed substances; multiple or recent incidents evaluated case-by-case.Illegal drug use of any kind after age 30 evaluated case-by-case; includes hallucinogens.Illegal use or possession of anabolic steroids within the last 3 years.Illegal use or possession of marijuana or derivatives within the past 12 months at time of application.Any illegal drug use after age 30 will be evaluated case-by-case per policy.Note : Illegal drug is defined per the Federal Controlled Substances Act and Virginia Code. Credit : Demonstrated history of financial irresponsibility. Contact academy staff to discuss specific credit issues.
Others :
Past or current gang affiliation.Dishonorable discharge from any military service.Untruthfulness or withholding information on any application or paperwork.Intentional failure to follow testing process directions.Note : This is not an exhaustive listing of background disqualifiers. Applicants successful in initial testing will undergo a thorough background investigation, including polygraph examination. Areas of concern are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Reduction of charges after plea or disposition before conviction.Juvenile crimes, undetected crimes.Driving patterns indicating recklessness.Other drug use or possession not covered above, including prescription drugs without proper prescription.Less than honorable military discharge, erratic work record, or poor employment references.Pending litigation must be resolved prior to consideration.Some minor offenses (e.g., littering) may not automatically disqualify; these are evaluated case-by-case in the full investigation.
