The Bureau of General Services is hiring for two (2) Laborer II positions located in Augusta, Maine. These are separate but identical positions, and applicants should submit materials for all postings to be considered for all opportunities.

DESCRIPTION :

This is maintenance and personal services work in performing semiskilled manual labor tasks in the construction, repair, maintenance and upkeep of various buildings, grounds. Responsibilities include the use and / or operation of a large variety of construction, trades, and maintenance tools and equipment such as power saws, air compressors, pavement breakers, levels, and cement mixers. Some positions may require frequent bending, constant moving, and lifting and moving heavy objects on a regular basis. Reasonable accommodation will be made for qualified handicapped employees. Work is performed under immediate supervision.

REPRESENTATIVE TASKS :

  • Services and operates air compressors in order to break pavement and concrete, or to drill holes.
  • Builds simple forms; operates cement mixer; and pours, trowels, and finishes concrete in order to build concrete surface.
  • Operates a light truck in order to transport workers and materials to job site.
  • Employs carpentry, electrical, masonry, and other trades tools in order to maintain and repair buildings and facilities.
  • Cleans automotive equipment, services with fuels and lubricants, changes tires, assists with repairs, and performs other manual tasks in order to maintain operational status.
  • Serves as helper and completes various semiskilled tasks in order to assist skilled trades workers.
  • Repairs and maintains parking lots, grounds, runways, and taxiways in order to ensure established condition and safety standards are met.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

  • Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in buildings and grounds maintenance, repair, and construction.
  • Ability to use and operate simple machines, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to service machines, tools, and equipment and make minor repairs.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Experience in the use of basic tools. and equipment associated with the duties of the specific position for which applying is required.

    LICENSING / REGISTRATION / CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS :

    A valid Maine Class C license.
