Special Education Teacher

POSITION SUMMARY :

This position reports through the Educational Coordinator to the Director of Adolescent Education. Provides instruction to students in a clinical day school setting within a safe, structured educational environment. Participates in the planning, instructing and evaluating of the curricula in accordance with State Department of Education standards. Determines and coordinates milieu / classroom behavioral interventions in collaboration with the school administrator and provides supervision to the assigned Teacher Assistant in the classroom. Attends Planning and Placement Team Meetings for assigned students. Contributes to creating a caring and compassionate environment through ECHN's Core Values of Teamwork, Communication, Respect and Caring.

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION

  • This position requires a minimum of a Bachelors degree in Special Education or a related field.
  • Valid CT Teaching Certificate in Special Education (#165).
  • EXPERIENCE

  • Prior experience working with special needs adolescents in a clinical setting, preferably to specific prospective service setting, is considered a plus.
  • Level of care age-specific competencies are required.
  • Familiarity with abuse and neglect reporting and duty-to-warn mandates and knowledge of community-based resources is preferred.
  • The duties of this position require strong teaching skills including a demonstrated strength in team orientation and strong written as well as verbal communication skills using the English language.

  • Must have exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills and an ability to serve as a role model in demonstrating effective coping skills.
  • Computer competency with basic knowledge of Microsoft WORD and OUTLOOK is required.
  • Must be flexible in approach so that service-specific as well as overall system needs can be met, be able to function effectively and, at times, independently in a work environment where multi-tasking is necessary.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to travel between multiple work sites; and travel is required in order to perform essential duties.

    4. Completes required written communications accurately and expeditiously, as evidenced by review of student records, feedback from families and supervisor observations.

    5. Consistently identifies objectives and sequences for instruction in writing lesson plans utilizing supplemental human resources and materials in classes, as evidenced by review of lesson plans and supervisor observations.

    6. Actively participates in the acquisition and application of new skills through continuing education that reflect current practice and clinical trends in field of licensure and in required trainings (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Validation), as evidenced by educational record and supervisor observations.

    7. Consistently demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of policies and protocols and executes them in a manner that minimizes escalating behaviors while promoting the emotional and physical safety of the milieu, as evidenced by supervisor observations.

    8. Effectively uses psychological and physical management techniques to manage violent or potentially violent situations consistent with Physical Management Training (PMT), as evidenced by peer feedback, participation in Early Response codes and Dr. Strong codes, attendance at PMT refresher trainings and supervisor observation.

    9. Demonstrates a proactive role in establishing safety procedures for proper arrival and dismissal times for students, as evidenced by an absence of safety incidents, staff feedback and supervisor observation.

    10. Demonstrates an awareness of equipment in need of repair in the school environment and notifies supervisor of problem areas, as evidenced by supervisor observation.

    11. Assumes an active role in identifying potential problems and suggesting changes in protocol or improvements to the school program, as evidenced by supervisor observations.

    12. Supports flexibility in job assignment by responding positively to change in daily work assignments, as evidenced by peer feedback and supervisor observations.

    13. Consistently expands knowledge base through active participation in clinical programming and by disseminating program information to prospective students and families, as evidenced by feedback from students and families, staff and supervisor observation.
