What You'll Be Doing
As the Director of People, you will lead and optimize our people functions to support our expanding team and business objectives. You'll build trusted relationships with leaders and employees, ensuring our HR strategies align with organizational goals. This role is crucial in driving our talent strategy, fostering a positive work environment, and supporting the growth and development of our team. This is a full-time, hybrid role based in West LA.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end recruitment efforts, including sourcing, interviewing, and extending offers to candidates
- Manage the full employee lifecycle, from recruitment and onboarding to performance management and offboarding
- Develop and implement policies to enhance team effectiveness and overall employee well-being
- Oversee role and responsibility clarity across the organization, ensuring job descriptions and expectations are consistently defined and communicated
- Partner with department leads to support promotion calibration, leveling frameworks, and equitable career progression
Employee Relations and Development
Build trusted relationships across all levels, providing HR advice and resolving employee issuesDesign and manage performance management processes, including goal setting, evaluations, and career development plansPromote a culture of continuous feedback and professional growth through training and development initiativesDesign and facilitate manager training, coaching programs, and support systems to build leadership capabilityLead initiatives around employee learning, including ongoing education such as lunch & learns, speaker series, and skills workshopsFoster and support a culture aligned with HOCK values, ensuring they are reflected in people practices, recognition, and internal programsOwn and lead impact initiatives (e.g., CBSS, Heal the Bay, Defy) that reflect our values, earth-sensitive, and community focusOrganizational Development and Strategy
Collaborate with leadership to identify and address organizational challenges, ensuring alignment with business objectivesDevelop and update policies, procedures, and HR strategies to support company growth and employee satisfactionMonitor and report on HR metrics (e.g., employee NPS, retention), using data to recommend improvements and support decision-makingOwn organizational design initiatives, including team structure planning, talent mapping, and workforce scaling strategiesPlan and execute company retreats, all-hands meetings, and internal initiatives that drive culture, connection, and clarityDevelop and lead internal communications strategy to ensure transparency, consistency, and engagement across teamsCompliance and Risk Management
Oversee and enhance HR systems (e.g., HRIS, payroll) to maintain accurate and confidential employee recordsEnsure compliance with local, state, and federal labor regulations and employment lawsMaintain and regularly review employee handbooks, policies, and documentation to reflect current practices and legal standardsRequirements
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field10+ years of experience in HR management, preferably in a startup or small business environmentProven ability to develop and implement HR strategies and programs that support business objectivesStrong knowledge of employment laws, compliance requirements, and HR best practicesProven ability to handle sensitive and complex HR issues with discretion and professionalismExceptional communication, interpersonal, and organizational skillsHighly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneouslyComfortable with ambiguity and adapting to shifting prioritiesStrong team player and work ethicWe Offer
