Resident Director

The Resident Director (RD) is a full-time professional staff member of the Department of Housing and Residential Education, within the Division of Student Affairs. The Residence Director is responsible for a housing area/s and a undergraduate Senior Resident Assistant (SRA), several undergraduate resident assistants (RA) and several student assistants that support the Residence Director. The Residence Director assists and coordinates such tasks as apartment/room assignments, transfers, verification of apartment condition forms, damage control systems, verification of occupancy, coordinate the check in and check out system. The administrator in this position is also a part of the Residential Education Staff direct reporting line in case of an emergency 24-hour/7 days a week (except when on approved leave) in his or her own area of direct responsibility and is a part of an on-call duty rotation for the Department of Housing and Residential Education. For this reason, the Residence Director is required to live in his/her assigned residence area, and an apartment with basic amenities is provided. This multifaceted role is most difficult and calls for extreme emotional stability and excellent human relations and administrative skills.

Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Essential Functions
The following are the functions essential to performing this job.

• The primary responsibility of the Resident Director is to select, train, supervise, evaluate and develop student staff, consisting of an undergraduate Senior Resident Assistant (SRA), several undergraduate Resident Assistants (RA), who shall jointly assist in the development of a residential environment for learning. S/he is responsible for the administration of Housing policies and procedures and in maintaining the quality of the Building, security, maintenance, custodial, and other services.
• The Resident Director performs the initial coordination of the disciplinary process through documentation using the Judicial software. The Residence Director serves as an educator during discussions with the involved resident(s) in an attempt to instill an understanding of the educational philosophy of the judicial process.
• S/he will maintain a work schedule designed for maximum availability and involvement with entire building community and the opening of the office. The Resident Director is expected to be available during some evening hours for various community meetings and events. S/he will become part of the professional on call duty rotation and will be responsible for performing weekly and vacation on call duty coverage as directed. While on duty, s/he is responsible for responding to emergency situations, maintaining logs and reports.
• Appropriately respond to emergency situations
• Initiating and implementing on-going training and staff development for assigned student staff.
• Maintaining communication with the main housing office, faculty, and administrators on a continuing basis.
• Identifying and communicating staff and community needs.
• Serve as a member of departmental committees and task forces.
• Providing leadership in developing a sense of community.
• Serving as an advisor to student groups as assigned by the Associate Director of Housing for Residential Education.
• Maintaining close communication with the community through staff and personal contact.
• Being aware of and addressing the needs of the community.
• Attending conferences and conventions as funds provide.
• Being aware of new developments in his/her field and Higher Education/Student Affairs Administration.
• Attending Department of Housing and Division of Student Affairs programs.
• Participating in Division of Student Affairs committees.

Assumes additional responsibilities as required by the Department of Housing and Residential Education.
Other Functions
Individuals in this job may be assigned one or more of the following tasks on a rotating or as-needed basis.

• This position serves as an important communication link between the communities, staff and the University administration.
• This position provides follow-up to the community residents, staff, faculty, as well as administrative concerns and needs.

• Provide staff direction by scheduling meetings with Senior Resident Assistants (SRA) and Resident Assistants (RA). Interpret and explain University policies and procedures, as well as policy rationale, and provide opportunities for staff to share in the development and evaluation of area and Housing policies and procedures.
• Maintain communication with other residence areas, faculty and administrators on a continuing basis.
• Identify and communicate community and staff needs.
• Serve as a member of Housing committees and task forces.
• Develop and obtain resources for residence hall programs and initiatives focusing on enhancing the academic environment in the residence halls.

SUMMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The Resident Director is responsible for professionally servicing the needs of the conference groups and their participants. The Resident Director will be working with a team of other Resident Assistants; Night Staff; Residence Directors; the Coordinator for Night-Time Operation; The Associate Director for Residential Education and the Associate Director of Housing to staff the various summer programs/camps.

• Excellent analytical, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to exercise superior judgment and discretion is required. Proven ability to handle multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of professionalism and attention to detail must be shown.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
• Supervision of a senior secretary, Senior Resident Assistants and Resident Assistants.
• Requires follow-up to students, staff, parental, faculty, as well as administrative concerns and needs.
• Requires 24-hour/7 days a week reporting in case of an emergency.
