About the Role: Job Summary

Under general direction, is responsible and accountable for nutritional patient care, diet counseling, management, and educational functions of a specialized clinical nutrition service. This position will care for patients in the child, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups. Employee performs clinical duties in accordance with population specific guidelines and adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as outlined in policy and procedures.

Minimum Job Qualifications
  • Licensure or other certifications: by Commission for Dietetic Registration or eligible for registration. Licensed by State of Georgia. CDCES (Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist) Required at hire OR within 2 years of hire.

  • Educational Requirements: Bachelors Degree in Food and Nutrition.

  • Minimum Experience: Two (2) years experience as Dietitian.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with Manager to oversee the management of all outpatient diabetes nutrition programs. Establishes measurable goals and objectives in accordance with specified system-wide and departmental goals and objectives; Implements plan to accomplish goals and objectives and reports achievement measurements at least annually. Maintains records for continued ADA recognition; works collaboratively with other members of the Diabetes Education Program and other departments to review JCAHO and ADA requirements; presents report to Diabetes Advisory Board annually. Maintains records and reports Performance Improvement activities at least annually. Selects educational materials and teaching tools appropriate for various patient types and needs. Collaborates with management and Public Relations in designing and marketing outpatient diabetes programs/services and in contributing diabetes-related articles to hospital and/or community publications.

  • Responsible for providing nutritional counseling for the Diabetes Education Program. Assesses the dietary needs of all outpatients enrolled in the Diabetes Education Program and develops an individualized meal plan. Provides counseling and education in nutrition and other phases of diabetes self-management to individuals and their families and/or significant others. Provides follow-up nutrition counseling as indicated or required. Provides group classes in nutrition for persons with diabetes and group classes for women with gestational diabetes.

  • Maintains effective written and verbal communication skills with supervisor, other departments, and other areas within the department to ensure timely job completion. Documents in patients' charts providing complete nutrition information and education received as required by JCAHO and ADA Recognition. Communicates well with other health care team members through patient care conferences, charting, e-mail and staff meetings. Communicates effectively with other Diabetes Education Program Staff to help coordinate and successfully meet ADA recognition requirements.

  • Responsible for assisting in the growth and promotion of diabetes education and/or nutrition counseling throughout NGHS and the community. Serves as a resource for the diabetes education team, other NGHS staff, outpatients and community. Participates in departmental, hospital and/or community activities that promote wellness. Presents community and/or organizational programs on diabetes and related topics as requested. Responsible for providing nutritional counseling to patients receiving care through the WOC department as needed. Meets with product and pharmaceutical representatives to stay current on new products and research.

  • Performs job correctly and safely and observes rules of conduct; maintains commitment to education and personal growth. Actively practices principles learned, including, but not limited to, the following topics: Universal precautions, fire and disaster, safety, MSDS, CQI, etc. Consistently uses proper safety equipment and follows rules of conduct safety. Knows where MSDS information is located. Demonstrates high standards of personal hygiene according to departmental policy, including, but not limited to: using proper hand washing technique, observing hospital "no smoking" policy, wearing hair net or hat in food production area and maintaining neat appearance. Seeks educational opportunities to increase clinical competency, including age-specific nutritional care, sufficient to meet requirements for licensure/registration.
