The United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards the Congress, Members of Congress, employees, visitors, and Congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism. The USCP protects and secures Congress so it can fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities in a safe, secure, and open environment. Initial Assessment Phase Orientation Session – an overview of the USCP mission, hiring process, training, and employment opportunities. Written Exam – the Police Officer Selection Test (POST) tests the candidate’s knowledge of basic math, reading, and grammar. A passing score of at least 70% (seventy percent) must be obtained in each section. Both sessions require a video conferencing system on a desktop or laptop computer. Cellphones and tablets are not allowed for video conferencing. Examination Phase Psychological – a battery of psychological assessments and a clinical interview. The examination lasts approximately four to six hours and is conducted online via desktop or laptop, camera, and microphone. Candidates are encouraged to be well‑rested and eat prior to the examination. Medical – an examination to determine if a candidate is medically qualified to perform the functional requirements of the job. Candidates must fast (abstain from food) prior to the medical examination. Polygraph – an examination used to confirm information obtained through the selection process. Physical Readiness Test – a test consisting of a timed 300‑meter run, push‑up test, and a 1.5‑mile run. Background Investigation Final phase of the selection process requires candidates to undergo a full background investigation, including a thorough review and verification of employment history, employer, residential, and personal references, in‑depth criminal and credit history, and academic records. Polygraph, medical assessment, criminal, credit, and tax checks are required. Must successfully complete all required training and a probationary period. Eligibility and Qualification Requirements Must be a United States citizen. Minimum age 21 years at the time of appointment; not older than 37 ordinarily, with the maximum entry age increased to 39 (or 40 if the individual turns 40 in the same month of initial appointment). Mandatory retirement occurs after 20 years of Federal law enforcement service, or at age 59 for officers hired at 39 or older. Valid REALID U.S. driver’s license that has not been revoked or suspended for the past year. Evidence of responsible driving in the past year. Male applicants must be registered for Selective Service; female applicants are exempt. Travel for hiring assessments and training is at the applicant’s expense. Must successfully complete a full field background investigation. Must successfully pass a comprehensive criminal history check covering the past 10 years. Must successfully pass a credit check and not be in default or delinquent on any Federal‑guaranteed student loans. Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor domestic‑violence crime are ineligible, as they cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition. Applicants must be able to possess a firearm and ammunition, as required for USCP Police Officers. Fingerprint check by the FBI for a criminal history record.
