About the Opportunity
We are launching a new ASAM Level 3.7 and 3.5 residential treatment center in Marshall, Missouri, offering 24-hour medically monitored and clinically managed care for adults in recovery from substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. As a Peer Recovery Specialist, you’ll use your lived experience and recovery journey to support clients in building motivation, resilience, and independence. In this higher-acuity environment, you will collaborate closely with clinical, nursing, and medical staff to provide emotional support, mentorship, and recovery education—helping clients navigate treatment and transition toward lasting recovery.
Position Overview
The Peer Recovery Specialist provides direct recovery support and mentorship within a structured, 24-hour residential setting serving individuals at the ASAM 3.7 and 3.5 levels of care. Working under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor and in coordination with the nursing and medical teams, the Peer Recovery Specialist promotes engagement, monitors safety, and models recovery-oriented behaviors consistent with the program’s trauma-informed, evidence-based approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Client Engagement & Support :
- Build positive, supportive relationships with clients based on empathy, trust, and shared recovery experience.
- Provide orientation to new admissions, helping clients understand program routines, expectations, and supports.
- Encourage active participation in therapy, medical, and recovery activities throughout the day and evening shifts.
- Assist clients in identifying strengths, developing goals, and maintaining accountability within their recovery plans.
- Offer motivational support and share recovery tools appropriate for clients’ individual needs and stages of change.
- Support clients in developing coping skills, relapse prevention strategies, and personal empowerment.
- Collaboration & Communication :
- Work collaboratively with counselors, case managers, nurses, and medical staff to ensure coordinated client care.
- Participate in daily multidisciplinary team meetings and shift reports to ensure smooth communication across departments.
- Provide timely documentation of services, observations, and client progress in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Communicate client concerns, risk behaviors, or medical changes to the clinical and nursing teams promptly.
- Support discharge and aftercare planning by connecting clients to appropriate community resources and peer supports.
- Safety & Compliance :
- Promote a safe, structured, and recovery-focused environment in accordance with ASAM 3.7 and 3.5 standards.
- Monitor client behavior, identify risk situations, and respond to crises or medical concerns per facility protocols.
- Assist nursing and clinical staff during medication lines, wellness checks, or client escorts as needed.
- Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and compliance with HIPAA, DMH, and program policies.
- Support facility safety measures, including participation in drills and incident documentation.
- Recovery Education & Mentorship :
- Co-facilitate or assist with recovery-based groups, community meetings, or educational sessions.
- Provide information and resources related to 12-step, SMART Recovery, or other mutual-aid models.
- Encourage the development of life skills, peer accountability, and community engagement.
- Model appropriate self-care, emotional regulation, and communication strategies aligned with recovery values.
Qualifications
Missouri Credentialing Board (MCB) certification as a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) or Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) required, or eligibility to obtain within 90 days of hire.Must have lived experience in recovery and maintain at least two (2) years of continuous sobriety.High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education in behavioral health or human services preferred.Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage clients in a supportive and nonjudgmental manner.Ability to work effectively within a 24-hour, interdisciplinary treatment environment.Must pass background check and drug screening in accordance with DMH requirements.Preferred Experience
Experience in residential, detox, or inpatient behavioral health settings.Familiarity with ASAM 3.5 and 3.7 levels of care and DMH documentation requirements.Understanding of trauma-informed care and motivational interviewing principles.Proficiency with EMR systems and basic computer literacy.Schedule
Full-time or part-time shifts available, including evening, weekend, and holiday coverage to support 24-hour operations.
