Although the conceptof cardio immunology’ is not new, clinical programs exist only at a fewacademic centers, with much renewed interest and efforts in the last decadethat focus on the impact of inflammation on the cardiovascular system.

Otherterms such as cardio rheumatology or cardio-inflammation could similarly beused, but the core features are the same.

The candidate’s researchbackground should be strong in cardiac inflammatory diseases, such as thecardiovascular impact of immune mediated inflammatory diseases, myo / pericarditisand early atherosclerosis observed in systemic lupus erythematosus andrheumatoid arthritis as well as inflammatory conditions typically managed bycardiology, including idiopathic recurrent pericarditis.

While cardio-immunologyis better defined in certain cardiac diseases such as heart failure with reducedejection fraction, its involvement is less appreciated in many other forms ofcardiac diseases, including heart failure with preserved ejection fraction or immunecheckpoint inhibitor-induced myocarditis.

Such unmet clinical needs underscore theimportance of understanding the effect of immune perturbations on the heart.
