Administrative Assistant I
Responsible for performing clerical and administrative work in support of various functions of Children and Family Services Division and the Head Start Program. Maintains budget and other financial records. Provides clerical and administrative support to administrative and professional staff. Prepares routine correspondence; compiles information for reports; maintains files of a variety of records, reports, documents and correspondence; and assists in various bookkeeping and clerical support functions. Responsible for screening and independently handling a variety of routine inquiries by telephone and in person. Work is performed under regular supervision.
Minimum Qualifications :
Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in secretarial science or business practices, and one (1) to two (2) years of experience in secretarial or clerical work, including experience in office management; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Requires acceptable criminal and child protective services background checks.
Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with an acceptable driving record.
Requires an initial physical examination to include screening for tuberculosis, and periodic re-examinations to ensure the incumbent poses no significant health risk to the participants in the Head Start Program.
Supplemental Information :
Thorough knowledge of office practices including the use of computers, word processing, database management, and spreadsheet software.
Thorough knowledge of basic arithmetic to include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and fractions.
Thorough knowledge of business English to include effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions.
Ability to work as a team player and interact / assist all employees, visitors, and program participants.
Ability to communicate and interact effectively with people from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds.

Physical Demands :
Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines including computers, typewriters, calculators, copiers, facsimile machines, etc. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking, bending, stooping, or standing for periods of time. There is some lifting of packages weighing between 10 and 30 pounds. Gripping occurs when collating materials and using office equipment. At times, it may require occasional running and crawling while interacting with children and it may be necessary to lift, handle, or carry a child weighing up to 55 pounds.
