Job Summary Overview :
The Commercial Sheet Metal Technician II is a mid-level tradesperson responsible for the fabrication, assembly, and installation of commercial and industrial HVAC ductwork and related sheet metal systems. This role requires solid field experience in reading blueprints, measuring, cutting, and installing various duct systems according to project specifications, mechanical codes, and safety standards. The Sheet Metal Tech II works under limited supervision and may assist in training or guiding entry-level technicians on job site procedures.
Responsibilities :
- Fabricate, assemble, and install rectangular, spiral, and round duct systems per specifications and drawings.
- Measure, mark, and cut sheet metal using shears, brakes, plasma cutters, and other hand / power tools.
- Install hangers, supports, dampers, diffusers, registers, and insulation for HVAC systems.
- Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and work orders to determine materials, layout, and installation sequence.
- Fit and secure ductwork connections and joints using appropriate methods (screws, sealants, flanges, and gaskets).
- Perform field modifications and adjustments to ensure proper alignment and fit.
- Assist in rigging, lifting, and positioning large duct sections safely.
- Inspect completed installations for quality, accuracy, and conformance to mechanical codes and company standards.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment following OSHA and company safety requirements.
- Report material needs, site issues, or design discrepancies to the foreman or superintendent.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Proficient understanding of sheet metal fabrication, duct layout, and HVAC system installation.Ability to accurately read and interpret mechanical blueprints and specifications.Skilled in the use of sheet metal tools, equipment, and machinery.Working knowledge of SMACNA standards, mechanical codes, and job site safety practices.Strong math, measurement, and layout skills.Effective communication and teamwork abilities.Ability to take direction, prioritize tasks, and meet project deadlines with minimal supervision.Commitment to quality workmanship and attention to detail.Education and Qualifications : (Required and / or preferred)
High School Diploma or GED required.2–5 years of experience in commercial or industrial sheet metal work required.Completion of an approved sheet metal apprenticeship program preferred.Experience working for a mechanical contractor or HVAC construction company highly desirable.Field of Study :
Sheet Metal Fabrication, HVAC Installation, or related Construction Trades.Certifications and Licenses :
OSHA 10 certification required (OSHA 30 preferred).Sheet Metal Worker certification or apprenticeship card preferred.Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.Aerial lift or forklift certification a plus.Work Environment and Physical Demands :
Commercial construction job sites, including rooftops, mechanical rooms, and interior spaces.Work is physical and may involve lifting 50–75 lbs, standing, kneeling, climbing ladders, and working at heights or in confined areas.Exposure to varying weather conditions and construction site hazards.
