The Schenck School is seeking an experienced Human Resources leader to serve as the Director of Human Resources for the 2026-27 school year. The School’s current Director of Human Resources is retiring in June 2026. The start date for this position is flexible, but ideally, the candidate will begin in April 2026 to allow for a smooth transition with the current Director.

The Schenck School is a specialized school serving dyslexic students in grades K-6. Students attend our school for a focused period of 2-3 years before transitioning to mainstream educational environments. The Schenck School fosters strong character development, community involvement, and a joyful learning environment, ensuring that our graduates are well-prepared to face the world as proficient readers and compassionate individuals.

Position Overview

The Director of Human Resources manages all Human Resource functions for The Schenck School, including recruiting, hiring, employee relations, payroll and benefits administration, and employee onboarding and offboarding.

The Director of Human Resources reports to the Director of Finance and Operations and serves as a member of the leadership team. The Director of Human Resources collaborates closely with the Director of Finance and Operations to cultivate a positive, supportive, and responsive employee experience, ensuring that HR policies and programs align with and support the school’s mission, culture, and strategic direction.

Responsibilities

Employee Relations

  • Manage the recruitment of new employees, including conducting candidate visits, performing background checks, and verifying references.
  • Coordinate initiatives that foster employee appreciation, recognition, and overall well-being.
  • Advise the Head of School and other members of the leadership team on employee relations issues.
  • Assist with the training of the leadership team on HR topics.
  • Maintain the employee handbook. Develop and revise personnel policies annually in collaboration with the Director of Finance and Operations, the School Principal, and the School’s attorney. Communicate handbook updates to employees.
  • Oversee the onboarding and separation process for all employees, ensuring a smooth, well-documented, and supportive experience for arrivals and departures alike.
  • Ensure HR practices and policies comply with applicable federal and state laws (FMLA, ADA, OSHA, Title VII, FLSA), and maintain accurate personnel records.

Benefits Administration

  • Work closely with the Head of School and the Director of Finance and Operations to maintain a competitive benefits strategy.
  • Ensure that the School is knowledgeable about current industry trends and remains competitive in the independent school market.
  • Manage and coordinate all employee benefits programs and vendors, including plan selection, claims resolution, compliance, and communication.
  • Support and advise employees on benefits selection.
  • Lead open enrollment and ensure legally compliant plan documents are available to employees.
  • Coordinate the school’s 403(b) retirement plan.
  • HR Systems & Data Management

  • Oversee the management of the school’s HRIS system, ensuring accurate employee data, system integrity, and timely updates to support payroll, benefits, reporting, and compliance needs. Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external vendors to improve functionality and automate key HR processes.
  • Compensation

  • Assist the Head of School and the Director of Finance with compensation strategy.
  • Assist the Director of Finance and Operations with the development of compensation budgets.
  • Draft, distribute, and maintain offer letters and annual employment agreements.
  • Payroll Administration

  • Manage the payroll process for the School. Prepare and review payroll documentation for accuracy, including changes in compensation, deductions, and benefits.
  • Ensure quarterly tax returns are filed accurately and on a timely basis.

  • Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Business Administration or Human Resources.
  • HR Certification is a plus.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in human resources management, preferably with an educational institution such as an independent school or small college.
  • A track record of success in positions of progressively increased responsibility. Functional experience in employee relations, compensation and benefits management, hiring, HRIS / payroll, and compliance.
  • Experience managing or coordinating payroll and benefit systems, preferably with exposure to platforms such as ADP.
  • Experience advising managers or leadership on employee relations.
  • Familiarity with employment law and regulatory compliance related to HR policies, especially in educational or nonprofit settings.
  • Main Working Relationships

    Faculty, administration, staff, vendors, trustees, and other professionals in the field at other schools.
