Job Description

JOB TITLE: ATHLETIC TRAINER REPORTS TO: SITE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

OVERTIME STATUS: EXEMPT PAY GRADE: 372

JOB SUMMARY

The athletic trainer works under the supervision of the athletic director. The athletic trainer will work under the direction of a Physician in a team environment through our health services partners.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The athletic trainer will:

  • Have a valid first aid and CPR card, follow the physician's orders when treating athletic injuries, provide emergency care and basic first aid when needed,
  • Be expected to implement and follow through with the athletic emergency plan,
  • Provide taping and bandaging when appropriate;
  • Be expected to record all injuries daily on a treatment chart, write an injury report on all athletic injuries requiring the use of the student athletic insurance or parent insurance.
  • Be responsible for record keeping of all documents and use an EMR application to communicate effectively,
  • Determine the status of all injured athletics which will include acute care, post-acute care, rehabilitation, return to activity (this will be done in consultation with our health services partners and supervising physician), contact parents when appropriate, report to head coaches on status and progress of all injured athletes, monitor all environment aspects such as weather/field conditions during contests.
  • Notify head coaches, health services partner, and athletic director of these conditions.
  • Serve as a monitor for all interested high school athletic traininig student aides (with the athletic director's approval);
  • Inventory and monitor all supplies throughout the school year;
  • Assist with developing the athletic training budget with the school athletic director, be responsible for all athletic training kits (this will include stocking and making sure each team has an athletic training kit);
  • Be expected to follow the practice/game plan procedures;
  • Be expected to follow the scheduled hours that have been developed,
  • Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times
  • Maintain a neat and clean athletic training clinic at all times which will include supervision of ice machine and whirlpools;
  • Offer his/her first aid skills to visiting teams if requested, adhere to the Portsmouth Public Schools weight room supervision policy/bloodborne pathogen guidelines/concussion policyEach full-time athletic trainer is assigned to one school only, ensuring focus and manageable caseloads.
  • Ongoing professional development opportunities, including support for CEUs.
  • Encouragement and financial support for membership in professional organizations (e.g., NATA, VATA).
  • Emphasis on safe return-to-play protocols to uphold ethical standards without pressure.
  • Part of a growing program that recognizes and celebrates the impact of athletic trainers on student-athlete success.
  • Supportive school leadership and a growing investment in student wellness and athletics.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Must possess a bachelor's degree (master's degree is preferred) from a C.A.A.T.E approved program, tuberculin skin test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis, experience as a certified/licensed Athletic Trainer, Board of Certification for Athletic Trainer, Virginia license/Board of Medicine in Virginia, CPR/AED Certified (instructor preferred), an endorsement as Athletic Trainer.
