The Opportunity:

The Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University (WSU) serves as a hub for innovation and collaboration in addressing pressing issues in crime and justice. Through policy-relevant research, comprehensive education, and community engagement, the department equips students with the skills to excel as practitioners and researchers. The Washington State Data Exchange for Public Safety (WADEPS) is a state-led initiative to enhance transparency and trust through standardized reporting of police use-of-force incidents. It provides tools for stakeholders to analyze data at various levels and supports officer training and statistical research through partnerships with organizations like WSU and Criminal Justice Training Commission (CJTC).

As the Public Relations/Communications Manager, you will serve as the lead communications professional for the Washington State Data Exchange for Public Safety (WADEPS). Responsibilities include developing and implementing comprehensive communications strategies to engage law enforcement agencies, external stakeholders, and the general public, developing annual reports and comprehensive program summaries, creating and maintaining the WADEPS website, managing external and media relations, providing communications support for the WADEPS leadership team, and ensuring all communication efforts align with project goals and objectives.

Additional Information:

This is a full time (100% FTE), temporary position. Overtime eligibility will be determined based on final salary placement.


Temporary End Date: This is a temporary position expected to end on January 1st, 2027. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.

Monthly Salary: $4,942.10 - $7,567.00 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in public relations, mass communications or a relevant fieldANDthree (3) years of professional experience in print or broadcast news media, public relations or marketing including proven experience with writing and editing skills; writing feature articles, brochures, annual reports and speeches; executing strategic communication plans and complex communication projects.

  • 5+ years of progressive communications experience, including strategic communications planning and implementation.

  • Demonstrated portfolio of communications work samples.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, or related field.

  • 7+ years of experience with at least 2 years in public sector, government, or law enforcement communications.

  • Experience managing communications for large-scale multi-stakeholder initiatives or consortia.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Experience working with government agencies, particularly in law enforcement or criminal justice settings.

  • Familiarity with Washington State government structure and legislative processes.

  • Experience with research communications and translating academic/technical content.

  • Knowledge of public records laws and transparency requirements.

  • Crisis communications experience.

  • Experience managing website development projects with external vendors.

  • Proficiency with specific tools (e.g.,AWS/cloud platforms, QuickSight, specificCMSplatforms).

  • Ability to coordinate with translation services, bilingual staff, or community liaisons to ensure communications reach diverse language communities served by Washington State law enforcement agencies.

  • Experience managing communications for consortia or multi-agency collaboratives.
