The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10-12) in its advanced, residential, college preparatory program.

It also serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry ( www.

The faculty and staff of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) invite you to join them in shaping and implementing the next generation of innovative and engaging learning experiences.

IMSA is actively seeking applications for the full-time position of Area Coordinator (DEI Liaison) in the Office of Residence Life with the Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion .

The Residence Life Office is a part of the Division of Student Affairs and strives to provide students with a safe, healthy, and comfortable living environment.

The DEI Office supports the development, delivery, and communication of programs, services, and curricula that address educational equity and social justice, as outlined in the Equity and Excellence Plan.

The Area Coordinator (DEI Liaison) is a full-time, 10 month plus 15 day (200 days total) exempt position. Area Coordinators are full-time, live-in, professional staff members.

Hours worked : Hours for this position may vary and allow for flexibility, but generally occur Monday - Friday between 10 : 00am - 9 : 00pm, but will require some evenings and weekends.

Residence Life - 30 hours / week (.75 FTE)

Responsibilities :

  • Train, supervise , and evaluate 8-12 professional Resident Counselors
  • Participate in Administrator on Call rotation, supervising on-call Resident Counselors and providing crisis and emergency response in accordance with Academy policies
  • Fulfill assigned operational responsibilities, which may include, but is not limited to :
  • DEI Laision
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive, evidence-based, equity-minded educational program rooted in social justice and develop cultural competence for students.
  • Assist in developing and implementing a process to assist Culturally, Linguistically and Economically Diverse (CLED), as well as other marginalized students, in transitioning into and through IMSA.
  • Manage the gender support plan, a resource for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive students, to guide IMSA in supporting their needs, as well as assisting their social transition while at school.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of other DEI training, research, and projects for students and Residential Life staff.
  • This position will support IMSA's Equity and Excellence Policy by ensuring the delivery of quality, equitable, and inclusive constituent-centered support, while promoting and maintaining an inclusive work environment and culture, that embraces the diversity of people and perspectives collaborating at IMSA, to ignite and nurture creative, ethical, scientific minds that advance the human condition.
  • Attend department meetings, conduct weekly staff meetings, and meet one on one with Resident Counselors weekly or bi-weekly
  • Oversee Residence Life curriculum programming
  • Supervise and assist with building operations, including building openings / closings, room changes, and walkthroughs, to ensure cleanliness, safety, and maintenance / damage needs addressed
  • Oversee all Resident Counselor administrative processes, including but not limited to weekly reports, check sheets, attendance in halls, PowerSchool and Footprints recordkeeping, and email listservs;

regularly assess practices for effectiveness, revise processes as needed, and train staff on revisions as they occur

  • Enforce Academy policies throughout the campus and c onduct student disciplinary hearings as assigned by the Chief Hearing Officer
  • Maintain up-to-date budget records and submit budget-related paperwork in a timely manner
  • Active engagement with best practices and emerging issues in higher education, gifted student learning, student housing and student affairs
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with offices on campus, including but not limited to security, maintenance, faculty, and the front desk
  • Establish positive relationships with students through informal interactions
  • Represent the Department of Residence Life on designated committees
  • Assist in the recruitment of Residence Life team members
  • Assist with divisional and campus-wide events, such as Preview Day, Convocation and Graduation
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications :

Skills and Experience :

The required skills and experience for this position include :

  • Bachelor's Degree (Masters degree preferred)
  • Experience supervising professional staff
  • Previous professional experience working with adolescents and / or residential experience
  • Previous professional experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Demonstrated crisis management skills and ability to respond to emergencies requiring use of stairs, quick movement and administration of first aid / CPR
  • Innovative problem-solving abilities and excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with diverse internal and external constituents.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Comfortable using technology to communicate and increase efficiency
  • Strong service orientation and ability to relate effectively with diverse individuals and groups at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to be productive, deliver high-quality work, take initiative, use good judgment, and problem-solve
  • Ability and willingness to work irregular hours
  • Valid drivers license

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements :

Work is performed in an office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Substantial time is spent working on a computer.

This role generally requires mobility, written and verbal communication, hearing and visual capabilities. However, reasonable accommodations, including assistive technology, may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform such requirements.

Salary and Benefits :

Salary for this position is $40,000 ($41,500 with a masters degree) for a 10-month plus 15 work day (200 days / year) work year.

IMSA offers a comprehensive benefits package including health (medical, vision, dental, and prescription) and retirement benefits.

The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) is reciprocal with other Illinois retirement systems such as the Teachers Retirement Systems of Illinois (TRS).

Live-in accommodations include a furnished apartment (limited occupancy based on apartment size) and meal plan.
