Grassroots Regional Director

The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Grassroots Regional Director assists the Director for Grassroots and Constituent Affairs with the development and implementation of WWP's grassroots program and oversees day-to-day management of WWP's volunteer-advocate engagement within an assigned region.

Primary responsibilities for this role include the facilitation of volunteer-advocate management, communications, recruitment, and training through direct outreach, meeting and event coordination, and operational oversight. The Grassroots Regional Director plays a key role in elevating the voice of our post-9 / 11 veterans by developing and managing a large, geographically dispersed volunteer-advocate network and facilitating advocacy training and engagement opportunities in furtherance of WWP legislative priorities.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Grassroots and Constituent Affairs Director with the development and implementation of a comprehensive grassroots strategy to engage WWP Alumni, family support members, and other groups and, where appropriate, assist with the advancement of WWP policy priorities.
  • Oversee WWP regional grassroots engagement for an assigned region, (e.g., East, Central, West region, with specific states to be determined), and provide leadership and operational direction to volunteer-advocate leaders to achieve organizational goals tied to legislative priorities.
  • Build, nurture, and maintain relationships with volunteer advocate leaders, including day-to-day management of outreach to volunteers through email advocacy campaigns and personal outreach to volunteers.
  • Oversee administration, logistical support, coordination, and execution of advocacy opportunities for the WWP Alumni, including volunteer development and coaching, formal recognition, and annual performance reviews.
  • Coordinate training and curriculum development for volunteer advocates and connect with them, obtain their support, and gain their attendance at local and regional grassroots events and activities.
  • Contribute to the development and distribution of relevant grassroots campaign materials, resources, and tools for volunteer advocates, including the development and facilitation of virtual advocacy programming and training via Zoom, Facebook Live, and other technology-based platforms.
  • Identify and develop operational methods for outreach to WWP's volunteer-advocate network with the responsibility to track, review, evaluate, and report to leadership on progression of regional volunteer-advocate engagements and outcomes.
  • Collect and report results and performance metrics for regional volunteer-advocate events and activities.
  • Assist with planning, preparation, and execution of two, large-scale annual congressional fly-ins as well as other regional and local events, to include participant recruitment, training and materials development; logistical preparation; meeting scheduling; and all other related requirements.
  • Assist with the management of the Government and Community Relations casework, to include internal and external referrals; general inquiries, and other correspondence and ensure the tracking and disposition of cases and facilitation of timely responses.
  • Input and maintain accurate records and data within organizational electronic-tracking system (e.g., Salesforce, Quorum, Cvent).
  • Speak to diverse audiences about all WWP programs and services. Develop community support for WWP. Present WWP vision and values to the community, communicating the benefits of WWP programs and services, and inspire them to become involved with and support the WWP vision.
  • Collaborate in the development and execution of WWP initiatives such as WWP's Annual Warrior Survey rollout, Soldier Ride DC, and the WWP Project Advocacy Newsletter.
  • Represent WWP as necessary at key events, meetings, discussions, hearings, conferences, or as directed by the VP of Government and Community Relations.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge and understanding of WWP's legislative priorities, military service organization (MSO) and veteran service organization (VSO) community priorities.
  • Attend and actively participate in required training and / or meetings, including but not limited to New Teammate Orientation, WWP Cares, ASIST Suicide Prevention training, Leadership training, culture / team based training, or departmental huddles.

  • Demonstrated understanding of WWP and its mission, values, programs, and services, and the impact of these programs and services on Wounded Warriors and their families.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals and build effective working relationships and networks in pursuit of common goals (e.g., building relationships with community partners, lawmakers, and their staffs).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the legislative process, public policy, and advocacy issues and processes.
  • Strong advocacy experience and a thorough understanding of the issues faced by the military and veteran population, including the military family.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly effective presentation skills with demonstrated ability to present information effectively to large audiences, small groups, and individuals and facilitate discussion, serving as a strong, effective representative of WWP.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities and ensure deadlines are met.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, analyze complex information, and offer creative, practical, and high-impact solutions.
  • Technological proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint); virtual platforms (e.g., Zoom), and other information tracking and management systems (e.g., Salesforce).
  • Unequivocal commitment to the highest standards of personal and business ethics and conduct.

  • EXPERIENCE

    Requirements

  • Three years of experience grassroots outreach and development, preferably involving veteran issues.
  • Five years of relationship-building experience with military organizations, veterans associations, regional non-profit organizations, community partnerships, or similar targeted constituents.
  • Five years of staff or volunteer management experience.
  • Three years of experience leading geographically dispersed teams.
  • Two years of legislative, advocacy, and policy experience, preferably in a government or non-profit organization.
  • Preferences

  • Five years of military experience or working with veterans or military service organizations.
  • Three years of experience organizing grassroots or community outreach campaigns.
  • Three years of experience working with a non-profit organization.
  • Experience assisting individuals in crafting personal stories about potentially sensitive subjects.
  • Three years of public speaking experience.
  • EDUCATION

    Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study. Equivalent combination of education, experience, training, or certification may be considered in lieu of degree.
