Under direct supervision of the Streets Supervisor, the purpose of this position is to perform general repair and maintenance of streets, drainage systems, signs, and signals. Employees in this classification perform manual level work. This position is responsible for assisting in the preparation of work areas, tools, equipment, and may perform other related functions as assigned.

Essential duties and responsibilities include participating in all phases of streets, gutter drainage and alley repair and construction, assisting in preparing work areas and securing job sites by setting up cones, barricades, and other traffic control devices, assisting in preparing tools, materials, and equipment necessary for various job assignments, performing preventative maintenance on equipment and tools, making repairs in pavement, curb, gutter and sidewalk using epoxy based chemicals and products, operating simple to moderately complex equipment, maintaining operational records, responding to emergency situations after hours and / or on weekends, participating in establishing traffic control devices such as barricades and cones, guiding traffic flow at work sites, assisting with setup, teardown, and clean up of special events and meetings throughout the City, conducting safety inspections of vehicles and equipment, setting up barricades, cones, and road signs, and wearing protective gear as indicated for the work assignment, assisting other City employees during storms and national disaster, complying with all written City policies and procedures, and adhering to assigned work schedule as outlined in City and department attendance policies and procedures.
If assigned to asphalt, duties include assisting with crack seal operations, assisting with all asphalt finishing hand tools, assisting with filling potholes with hot mix asphalt, and assisting with pavement reconstruction and repairs. If assigned to concrete, duties include assisting with setting up forms and rebar, assisting crew members with small hand tools like shovels and concrete rakes. If assigned to drainage, duties include assisting with shooting elevations, assisting with setting up forms and rebar, assisting crew members with small hand tools, and carrying small debris from areas like creeks and lakes.
Other job functions include performing other duties as assigned or directed. Minimum qualifications include a High School Diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by previous experience and / or training involving street / drainage maintenance or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience. Must possess a valid Texas Class "A" commercial driver's license or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of employment. Must pass a drug screen and background check, must have Class C Texas Driver's License, must obtain the National Incident Merit System (NIMS) certificate IS-100 and IS-700 within 6 months of employment, and during storms or natural disasters, staff will be divided into two 12-hour shifts. During storms or natural disasters, staff may be called in while on vacation.
Physical demands include the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and / or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds). Some tasks require visual and odor perception and discrimination. Work environment may require exposure to strong odors and / or smoke, traffic hazards, extreme heat / cold or extreme weather conditions.
