Director, Recycling Operations Autos

The Director, Recycling Operations reports directly to the Auto and Metals Recycling Business (AMR) division's Co-Chief Operating Officers. The Director, Recycling Operations helps to establish and execute a strategic plan, manages day-to-day activities to drive profitability and maintains a safe and environmentally compliant workplace.

The incumbent ensures assigned region adheres to all compliance policies and procedures and that every employee conducts business in an ethical and legal manner. They will provide leadership to direct reports and establishes clear lines of communication, ensuring plans and objectives are achieved. Also, maintains positive relationships with community leaders, customers, suppliers and vendors.

The primary responsibility is to provide the leadership necessary to direct and inspire others to achieve goals. They maintains an overview of and vision for the regional business, providing clear directions and developing appropriate goals and individual accountabilities to guarantee success individually and collectively at all levels.

The Director, Recycling Operations must think strategically; confront issues directly; and be energetic, resourceful and take full charge and ownership of the region. They will build a team of responsible and dedicated managers who are vigilant and able to build teams that empower subordinates, creating the succession plans essential to sustain knowledge and growth of the business.

The Director, Recycling Operations analyzes and refines, as necessary, the infrastructure, metrics and management of all regional Operations. Drives strategic planning, budgeting, and development of the forecasting models necessary to contribute to long-term operational excellence. Areas to address include, but are not limited to :

  • Evaluates changes outside the organization including competition, global markets, environmental issues, government regulations in development etc. that might affect the region's ability to meet goals and grow.
  • Performs SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis and addresses changes inside the organization, indicating how the results might affect performance.

The Director, Recycling Operations ensures proper coordination and communication exists between support and business functions and personally directs staff services in assisting the Facility Management in their responsibilities. The Director, Recycling Operations takes personal interest and, if necessary, the lead, in continuous improvement and establishment of best business practices. Production Operations including equipment availability, utilization and production reporting; Support Services for financial forecasting and P&L preparation and analysis; and all services in their effort to provide better management reporting to field managers and improvement of processes and policies in support of overall AMR objectives. The Director, Recycling Operations regularly tours each facility and displays proper command presence, professional bearing and enthusiasm to inspire personnel while setting standards for teamwork, performance and ethical behavior.

Essential Functions :

  • Develops competent, trained teams who are motivated to accomplish objectives. Demonstrates the key Radius leadership principles and inspires all employees to do the same. Ensures comprehensive human resources program is in place covering : legal and company compliance elements; employee development plans; succession plans; training plans; identification of high potential employees with special development plans; and corrective action plans for underperforming employees.
  • Responsible for the development and achievement of realistic operational budgets and underlying goals and objectives.
  • Provides direction and leadership to Regional General Managers, holding them accountable for establishing and achieving goals that are consistent with the overall regional plan.
  • Ensures operations are conducted in a safe and efficient manner. Responsible for coordinating efforts of Division and Corporate Safety and Environmental teams, ensuring proper training and adherence to policies and procedures. Oversees related company policies and procedures. Shows leadership in this area, ensuring safety and environmental compliance is in the forefront of every employee, supplier, customer and visitor within the region.
  • Communicates with AMR management on trends and events within the region, including : safety incidents; environmental issues; all notifications set forth in the emergency communication plan; changes in monthly performance to forecast; significant personnel events and violations of any company policy or Code of Conduct.
  • Ensures proper controls are established and maintained, including month-end inventories, spending authorizations, contract commitments and material purchase commitments. Working with Finance personnel, the Director, Recycling Operations ensures validity of reported income and underlying balance sheet.
  • Ensures active continuous improvement (CI) plan is in place, operating in conjunction with guidelines established by the division. Through leadership and top-down management, the Director, Recycling Operations is the owner of CI in the region. The Director, Recycling Operations demonstrates leadership by driving improvement, asking questions, attending sub team meetings (as necessary), reviewing results and constantly challenging everyone in the organization to identify areas for continuous improvement.
  • Internal Control Responsibilities :

    Supports the Company's Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures and controls to better relate to the business. Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.

    Supervisory Responsibility :

    The Director, Recycling Operations directly and indirectly supervises the following functions : Operations Management; Finance Business Partner(s); field Public Relations; field Human Resources; field Information Technology.

    Interpersonal Contacts :

    Strong line of communication with AMR Executive Management including the Co-Presidents, Co-Chief Operating Officers, VP Commercial Operations, Chief Financial Officer, Executive Director, Business Processes & Development, VP FE Export Sales, VP Non-Ferrous Sales, VP, Human Resources as well as with Regional Health and Safety Engineer(s), Regional Environmental Manager(s), Environmental Health and Safety Engineer(s), all regional managers and office personnel at the facilities, departments at the corporate offices and within other regions to exchange information and coordinate services.

    External contacts include union representatives, contractors, vendors, suppliers, scrap dealers, local and federal governmental regulation agencies, community leaders and various business contacts.
