JOB TITLE : Aide-Deaf / Blind Intervener
REPORTS TO : Coordinator Special Ed

PRIMARY PURPOSE :
The Deaf / Blind Intervener Aide will assist in providing support to a student with deafblindness for all or part of the instructional day, as determined by the student's Individualized Educational Program (IEP). The Intervener works cooperatively with parents and a variety of direct service providers and consultants. The Intervener will be consistently available to interpret the world for the student diagnosed as Deaf-Blind.

QUALIFICATIONS : Required :
- High School graduate or GED from an accredited institution
- 48 hours of college coursework
- Pass Spring ISD's NCLB test in the areas of Reading, Writing, and Mathematics
- Willingness to complete a 2-year program of studies in the area of intervener for deafblind
Preferred :
60+ hours (or higher) from an accredited college or universityOne+ year experience with childrenCompletion of a 2-year program of studies in the area of intervener for deafblindSPECIAL KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS :
Ability to work well with childrenAbility to communicate effectivelyAbility to correspond (written and oral) in English and their home languageMAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES :
Primary responsibility is to assist in providing support to a student with deafblindness during all or part of a school day as part of an educational team, and as indicated in the student's IEPAssist the teacher in the implementation of the student's IEP and the modifications and instructional techniques recommended by instructional and related service staffBecomes proficient in students' individual communication methods and strategiesAssist students with physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygieneAssist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting or positioningAssist the teacher in the preparation of instructional materials as neededAssist the teacher in supporting the student during community-based instructionAssist the teacher in visiting or providing instruction in the student's home as deemed appropriate by the IEP committeeAssist the teacher in maintaining communication between home and school, and keeps a daily log of information about the student and his / her activitiesParticipates in IEP meetings and student-staff meetings as neededAssists in the assessment of the student and in the preparation of IEPs, progress reports, behavior plans, data collection, and other documentation for program monitoring including records and reports required by Federal, State, or local laws / regulationsParticipates in site-based, regional, and statewide training in the area of deafblindness as well as training sessions related to the education of students with disabilitiesCollaborates in a team model on issues related to deafblindnessMaintain strict confidentiality regarding special education student informationPerform all other duties as assignedWORKING CONDITIONS :
The usual and customary methods of performing this job required the following :
Prolonged periods of time, sitting, moderate standing, stooping, bending, reaching and repetitive hand motions, prolonged use of a computer. Ability to maintain emotional control under stress. May require lifting no more than 50 pounds. Overtime is required as necessary.
