New Country Day Camp is an 8-week, outdoor summer camp for campers in kindergarten-8th grade. NCDC operates M-F, 8am-5pm, and provides transportation for staff and campers to and from our campgrounds on Staten Island via multiple locations throughout Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.

NCDC is a neurodiverse camp community, and all staff members are responsible for supporting neurodivergent and neurotypical campers and staff to have successful summers.

JOB PURPOSE

Reporting to the Support Program Manager, Support Supervisors play a pivotal role in coordinating and supervising our disability-inclusive model that provides extra support to campers with additional social / emotional / behavioral / mental health needs (includes diagnoses such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADD / ADHD, mood or anxiety disorders, sensory processing issues, etc.

Support Supervisors ensure that all campers can experience the joy of camp in the most inclusive, least restrictive environment possible.

SCOPE OF INFLUENCE

  • Direct client group : Campers who require additional support & their families (7th & 8th graders); Counselors in Training (CIT) (14- & 15-year-olds)
  • Directly supervises : 3 6 Support & Inclusion Counselors
  • Will act as resource for CITs pre-camp & during the summer
  • Will act as a task manager for group counselors when necessary
  • Will collaborate closely with other Support Supervisors, Division Supervisors, and Program Specialists
  • Directly supervised by Support Program Manager

K EY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Camper Care

  • Work directly with families, supervisor, and NCDC leadership to create Individualized Camper Plans (ICPs) for campers who require additional support
  • Beginning in April, conduct virtual and / or in-person intakes with new NCDC camp families and their camper(s)
  • Update ICPs for returning campers on specified caseload
  • Train supervisees (Support & Inclusion Counselors) how to use and implement ICPs for camper success
  • Observe and check-in with Support & Inclusion Counselors and individual campers as needed throughout the day
  • Be available for crisis management for all NCDC campers throughout the camp season
  • Utilizing disability-inclusion and trauma-informed care as a lens for all aspects of camper experience (e.g., assessing activities and providing necessary support to ensure a camper’s success)

Logistics and Communications

  • Attend pre-camp meetings with families and / or staff as needed
  • Help with interviewing, hiring, and onboarding Counselors in Training (CITs)
  • Communicate with parents as needed through the camp season, including being available via phone and email until 6 : 30pm nightly
  • Compose and send families individual camper highlights (Rose Communications) weekly
  • Communicate and effectively partner as needed with Division Supervisors, Aquatics Staff, and Program staff regarding camper needs and concerns

Leadership and Staff Supervision

  • As a member of the NCDC Head Staff, model professional behavior for campers and other staff at all times
  • Be present at all days of orientation, camp, and staff meetings during the camp season
  • Proactively problem-solve and motivate colleagues as difficult moments present themselves throughout the camp season; encourage flexibility and understanding as means to achieve common goals
  • Train, observe, and evaluate a staff of 3 6 Support & Inclusion Counselors, who are assigned 2-3 campers that require additional support.

They offer extra support to the group as a whole & are fully briefed on the ICPs for campers in their group.

  • Be available as a mental health resource for CITs during the summer
  • Establish and promote a commitment to the mission and vision of NCDC
  • Learn and implement NCDC’s restorative approach to supervision and behavior management, including regular check-ins and evaluations for supervisees
  • Partner respectfully with the Division Supervisor on crisis management using a restorative approach, working to provide the proper supports for campers within the division

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required Knowledge

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent work experience in Social Work, Education, Special Education, Psychology, or related field required.
  • Experience as a leader in an inclusive, educational setting, or similar experience.
  • Background in elementary and / or special education, social work, or relevant setting
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Can begin minimal part-time work starting in March working (remotely and / or in-person) with families to create and update ICPs
  • Can attend all days of staff orientation (weeknights and some weekend days in June) and in-person camp (June 27th to August 16th).
