Interfaith Medical Center was formed on December 31, 1982, with the merger of two large, previously independent hospitals, the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and Medical Center in Crown Heights and St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Bedford-Stuyvesant. St. John's Episcopal and Brooklyn Jewish Hospital grew during the first half of the 20th century. They were the largest employers in Central Brooklyn at the height of their successes.
