To this end, the UCLA School of Law's Executive Director of Alumni and External Relations is responsible for taking a leadership role in developing and implementing strategies around growing the school's philanthropic pipeline, communications, programming, and donor and alumni engagement.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Associate Dean of External Affairs, this position plays a key role in connecting alumni and other interested individuals to the activities of Law School through events, volunteer activities, direct engagement, and philanthropy.
This role works closely with the Associate Dean to develop visibility among important constituents, create clear, strategic messaging, and formulate programming and events that position the school as a national thought leader and top law school.
This position plays a leadership role in developing messaging, implementing strategy, and ensuring timely execution. The Executive Director will have broad responsibilities that bring into focus new initiatives and funding priorities in order to effectively engage and steward alumni, donors, and other key constituents.
The incumbent understands fundraising and how engagement plays into that formula, has strategic events and stewardship experience, and has a track record of maintaining close and collaborative relationships with colleagues.
The Executive Director will guide, direct, and manage the law school's Alumni and External Relations team and identify, build, nurture, and maintain effective relationships with alumni and other key constituencies.
This position serves as a primary or principal advocate for the institution to its external constituents.
Salary & Compensation
UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

Qualifications
- 5-7 years Experience in Fundraising in a Professional Environment (Required)
- Demonstrated experience managing and leading staff (Required)
- Experience cultivating and soliciting individuals, particularly at the major and special gift levels. (Required)
- Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of alumni engagement within a university setting, including short and long-range strategic plans, vision, goals, objectives, and programs. (Required)
- Skill in developing and implementing successful strategies for the identification, cultivation, and engagement of individuals.
Experience in successful relationship-building with prospects, volunteers and board members. (Required)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Positive, engaging and motivating personality. Ability to effectively and enthusiastically represent UCLA Law and make professional presentations in large and small group settings. (Required)
- Outstanding interpersonal skills in developing and enhancing relationships, working collaboratively with, and providing senior staff assistance to the Dean, Associate Dean, development, law school colleagues, alumni and volunteer groups and boards, donors, and others. (Required)
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal direction, balancing multiple priorities and responsibilities in a demanding environment.
Strong team orientation. High level of initiative and flexibility; open to innovative ideas and solutions. (Required)
Excellent judgment, time management and organizational skills. Able to diffuse sensitive situations using tact, diplomacy and discretion.
Self-starter who works independently and can manage multiple tasks simultaneously. (Required)
- Demonstrated leadership skills to supervise a team of alumni and external relations professionals, and student workers. (Required)
- Working knowledge of complex databases, Microsoft Word, Excel, Advance, and PowerPoint. Excellent oral and written communication skills. (Required)
- Good judgment and discretion in the handling and maintenance of confidential donor files. (Required)
- Knowledge of management principles, including personnel and budget administration with demonstrated experience in implementing effective personnel and budget operations and practices. (Required)
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including skills to lead, direct, mentor, evaluate and mentor staff. (Required)
- 5-7 years of fundraising experience and knowledge of principles and practices of development within a complex research university setting. (Preferred)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
- Bachelor's Degree in business, management, public administration, administration, or philanthropy and / or equivalent combination of education and experience / training (Required)
- Master's Degree in business, management, public administration, administration, or philanthropy (Preferred)

- Ability to work evenings and weekends when necessary. (Required)
Schedule
M-F ; 8 : 00 a.m. to 5 : 00 p.m ; This position is full-time and on-site at least 2 days a week.
