Job description

Overview

Do you have interest in joining a small team of engineers and technicians performing engineering design for infrastructure improvements at many of the State's premier recreational sites administered by the Dept. of Forests, Parks and Recreation, Fish and Wildlife Dept. and Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC)? The Agency Facilities Engineering Section within DEC is seeking an experienced Environmental Technician to augment our technical staff. Our group is unique within DEC because we function as a civil / environmental engineering consulting group for our partners within the Agency to enact improvements to the infrastructure that supports public access to our beautiful landscape.

This includes all facets of engineering from project development, topographic surveying, design, plan / specification preparation and construction oversight for a wide variety of Agency infrastructure projects including water / wastewater / stormwater upgrades for the State Park system; boat access / fish hatchery / wildlife management area improvements for the Fish & Wildlife Department, as well as technical assistance to DECs Dam Safety Section and other DEC programs. This position will be directly involved in project development including preliminary site reconnaissance and field testing, topographic surveys, Computer Aided Design (CAD) plan development based on conceptual designs, preparation of environmental permit applications, bid package preparation, and construction inspection under the guidance of the Section's design engineers.

Duties may also include performing engineering studies in support of designs and coordinating with project stakeholders and regulatory programs to ensure positive outcomes. All of this work involves ample opportunity to be in the field in some of the nicest natural areas in the State. The successful candidate will be expected to have a demonstrated background in engineering or a related science / technical field with solid analysis and communication skills, including the ability to detail technical findings from field investigations and construction inspections into concise report formats. Use of AutoCAD Civil 3D in design development and knowledge of topographic surveying techniques utilizing Total Station and / or GPS-guided instruments are core facets of the work we do, and would be highly valued in reviewing applicant qualifications. Experience with ArcGIS mapping tools and HydroCAD or other hydraulics / hydrology software would be considered highly as well.

We work closely in a team environment with both our immediate group and our clients, who are also our coworkers. We place high value on collaboration and cross training, learning from each other, and seeing our projects through successfully. If you are interested in this rare opportunity and meet the required educational and work experience criteria as noted in the posting, please consider applying online.
