We are seeking a skilled Model-Based Controls Engineer to join our team. This role will involve the design, modeling, and validation of electrical and hybrid powertrain systems using MATLAB and Simulink. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in dynamic system modeling , real-time simulation , and control software development for complex electro-mechanical systems, with a passion for innovation in the transportation and power systems industry.

Job Description

As a Model-Based Controls Engineer , you will be responsible for modeling, validating, and deploying control system plant models for hybrid and electric locomotive systems. You will work with a variety of dynamic systems-including AC / DC motors, power electronics, and hybrid battery systems-to support the design, development, and validation of advanced powertrain technologies. The Model-Based Controls Engineer will also collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to develop physics-based models and generate real-time executable code for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environments.

Key Responsibilities

Design and model dynamic systems such as hybrid battery-electric powertrains, AC induction motors, DC motors, and power electronics (including IGBT rectifiers, relays, and contactors).

Develop, validate, and maintain plant behavioral models for real-time simulation and control validation.

Deploy plant models through auto code generation using tools such as RTW and SystemBuild .

Validate model accuracy using locomotive field data and refine system parameters accordingly.

Participate in simulator design and development to support software validation and new locomotive designs.

Collaborate with subsystem design teams to identify new modeling requirements and develop behavioral and physics-based models.

Maintain a configuration control system for dynamic system models to ensure version integrity and traceability.

Build, review, and debug MATLAB / Simulink and C / C++ code for integration in real-time test environments.

Provide technical support in HIL testing labs , assisting with troubleshooting and system integration activities.

Ensure that all modeling and validation work complies with engineering standards, documentation requirements, and safety practices.

Essential Skills

Expertise in modeling dynamic systems such as hybrid battery-electric powertrains, motors, and power electronics.

Strong proficiency in MATLAB / Simulink for control development and system simulation.

Hands-on experience generating real-time C / C++ code using Auto Code Generation tools.

Ability to validate and correlate models with field or test data for system accuracy.

Proficiency in control software development , testing, and validation using model-based design methods.

Strong understanding of electrical systems , power conversion , and control theory .

Experience troubleshooting systems in real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environments.

Excellent analytical, documentation, and problem-solving skills.

Educational Background

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering , Computer Science , Power Electronics , or Mechatronics .

Desirable Skills

Familiarity with locomotive or heavy machinery systems .

Knowledge of system integration testing , embedded controls , and simulation-based validation .

Experience with configuration management tools and version control systems .

Ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional engineering teams.
