Investigator
The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The Legal Bureau serves as in-house counsel to the Department and assist members of service in interpreting local, state, and federal laws. The Bureau represents the Department in a variety of civil matters, produces records and video footage to external oversight bodies and for litigation, reviews and negotiates complex contracts and memoranda of understanding, and assesses Department policies, practices, procedures, and forms for legal sufficiency and conformance with the law.
The Legal Bureau is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Investigator for their Body-Worn Camera Unit as well as their Subpoena Litigation Unit. The Body-Worn Camera Unit evaluates legal issues when dealing with body-worn camera video releases to various outlets. The Unit searches, reviews, and conducts preliminary investigations related to video footage requests, and applies appropriate redactions to footage where necessary. The Unit is responsible for producing footage in response to requests from government agencies, Freedom of Information Law requests, and in matters related to criminal and civil discovery.
The specific duties and responsibilities of Investigators assigned to the Legal Bureau's Body Worn Camera Unit will include : analyzing and intaking requests from the public and government agencies for NYPD body-worn camera footage, utilizing various NYPD systems and applications to assist in the processing and investigation of requests, examining responsive footage and applying appropriate redactions and edits in accordance with all applicable laws and Department policies, and reporting results of body worn camera video review to unit supervisors.
The NYPD Subpoena Litigation Unit is responsible for processing, reviewing, and responding to subpoenas, court orders, and motions for records served upon the Department. It is also responsible for responding to requests for records and information from other governmental entities at the local, state and federal levels. The specific duties and responsibilities of an Investigator assigned to the Subpoena Litigation Unit will include : analyzing and intaking subpoenas, court orders, and outside agency requests for NYPD records, utilizing various NYPD systems and applications to assist in the processing and investigation of requests, examining responsive records and applying appropriate redactions in accordance with all applicable laws, and reporting results of searches and record review to unit supervisors.
