DIESEL DIAGNOSTIC TECHNICIAN (Primary Diagnostician) Reports To: Operations Manager / Lead Technician Location: Central Florida Diesel Performance — Cocoa Employment Type: Full-Time, On-site Pay Range: $30–$35/hour, commensurate with diagnostic capability and experience Typical Shop Hours: Monday–Thursday, 9:00am–6:00pm; Friday 9:00am-5:00pm (1-hour unpaid lunch) Position Purpose We are hiring an experienced Diesel Diagnostic Technician to serve as our primary diagnostician, the point person for complex drivability, electrical, no-start, and intermittent issues. This role owns the diagnostic process from verification through pinpoint testing, then supports the team by completing repairs when applicable and/or handing off repair plans with complete documentation. This position directly impacts throughput, comeback rate, customer satisfaction, and gross margin. Success is measured by accuracy, documentation quality, workflow discipline, and consistent productivity, not speed alone. Role Summary Primary function (majority of time): Advanced diagnostics + building clean repair plans Secondary function (as workload requires): Perform repairs like a standard technician to support bay flow and throughput Customer communication: Managed by Service Advisor (technician communicates internally unless directed otherwise) Core Responsibilities & Performance Standards 1) Diagnostics & Root-Cause Accuracy Objective: Identify root cause correctly and efficiently. Standards: Verify concern scan/data review pinpoint testing confirm failure mode repair plan verification approach Document diagnostic steps/findings before repair authorization No parts replacement without documented diagnostic justification (test results, measurements, or confirmed failure) If diagnostic time will exceed reasonable guidelines, flag early and document why 2) Repair Quality & Verification Objective: Deliver durable, code-compliant repairs with strong first-time fix performance. Standards: Repairs completed to manufacture requirements and shop SOPs Verification required: post-repair scan and functional/road test as applicable Rework/callbacks tied to workmanship are reviewed and corrected with prevention steps 3) Productivity & Workflow Support Objective: Maintain steady output without sacrificing quality. Standards: When assigned repair work, complete within approved labor hours when feasible; escalate variances early Maintain steady bay flow—diagnostics should not become a bottleneck Communicate delays, parts constraints, or added findings to the Operations Manager immediately 4) Documentation & Reporting Objective: Notes must support billing, warranty, and future reference. Standards: Notes entered daily and include: diagnostic steps, findings (measured values where applicable), repairs performed, parts used, verification results Documentation supports the estimate/invoice and protects the shop in the event of disputes 5) Tools, Equipment & Asset Care Objective: Protect shop assets and minimize downtime. Standards: Proper use of shop equipment; report malfunctions immediately Prevent damage to customer vehicles and shop property; incidents documented and reviewed Maintain personal tools required for the role 6) Safety & Compliance Objective: Safe operation and regulatory compliance. Standards: Follow PPE, lifting, and safety protocols 100% of the time Comply with environmental/disposal requirements (fluids, filters, batteries) Maintain a clean, organized work area 7) Communication & Team Coordination Objective: Smooth workflow via clear internal coordination. Standards: Communicate findings, repair plans, and delays promptly to the Operations Manager Provide clear, actionable information to the Service Advisor via documented notes and internal handoff Avoid direct customer communication unless explicitly directed 8) Professional Conduct & Accountability Objective: Professionalism and integrity. Standards: Prepared and on time; follows priorities as assigned Accepts coaching and participates in continuous improvement No unauthorized work, pricing discussions, or customer commitments Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Diagnostic accuracy / verified root-cause rate First-time fix rate Comeback/rework rate (tech-attributable) Labor efficiency (shop standard) Documentation completeness/quality Cycle time adherence (for assigned work) Safety compliance Authority Boundaries (Non-Negotiable) Diagnostics & repairs within assigned RO: Yes Pricing decisions/discounts: No Customer commitments/timelines: No (through Service Advisor) Scheduling: No Parts substitution: With approval Deviations from SOP: With approval + documentation Required Qualifications Diesel repair experience or formal training with strong hands-on capability Proven diagnostic aptitude (electrical, drivability, scan tool/data interpretation) Able to document work accurately and consistently Physically able to perform shop duties safely Preferred Qualifications ASE or manufacturer certifications Experience across light/medium/heavy-duty diesel platforms Strong electrical/network diagnostics (intermittent faults, module communication issues) Familiarity with shop management systems (TekMetric or similar) Growth & Advancement Path Senior Diesel Technician Diagnostic Specialist Lead Technician (as business needs dictate) Competitive hourly pay + quarterly performance bonus
