Underwriting Supervisor
Glatfelter Insurance Group is seeking an Underwriting Supervisor for our Glatfelter Healthcare team who will support the Program Manager in managing the underwriting of an assigned Program including responsibility for profit and loss. The position is responsible for demonstrating exemplary customer relationships with producers and all Glatfelter associates through demonstrated professional communications skills. The supervisor assumes responsibility for the Program Manager when that individual is not available. The supervisor will manage the quality and quantity of work performed by the P&C Underwriters, and provide guidance, training, and support to the underwriting staff.
This position is required to be onsite at our Leader Heights, York, PA office.
Key responsibilities include managing the daily underwriting of the property & casualty book of insurance business, monitoring employee's adherence to authority delegation, managing workflow and processing issues, accepting, rejecting or requesting additional information from the submitting client, reviewing new business submissions for completeness and acceptability, reviewing exception renewals, monitoring rate vs. target, pricing standards/guidelines, risk control and claims activities, evaluating and comparing competitor's forms and coverages, assisting Program Manager with edits or revisions to program underwriting guidelines or coverage forms, establishing, implementing, and communicating divisional underwriting philosophies and systems, reviewing appeals by clients, responding to inquiries from clients regarding pricing and coverage issues, referring and suggesting action on any unusual exposures to the Program Manager for approval, communicating with program sales staff regarding current market conditions, problems, and opportunities in region, attending agent meetings, conventions, trade shows, visiting client offices as needed, preparing and submitting reports for management use as required, planning and assisting with product knowledge seminars as needed, assisting with the recruitment and selection of new underwriting associates, coordinating and guiding training through the creation and management of performance plans to support staff growth and professional development, monitoring the quality and quantity of work by underwriters and underwriting assistants in respective program area, maintaining OnBase files consistent with standard file procedures, evaluating the performance of direct reports on an ongoing basis and providing feedback and coaching, as needed, and conducting annual performance reviews on a timely basis. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned by management.
What we're looking for includes a BA degree in insurance, business or related field preferred or appropriate industry related experience, must attain or be working toward AU, CPCU, ARM designation or comparable higher insurance education, a minimum of five (5) years commercial lines underwriting or related experience in either an insurance company or in an agency, must have or attain within three (3) months and maintain current property-casualty license for resident state and other licenses as required, prior supervisory experience required, demonstrated understanding and knowledge of GIG underwriting authority and underwriting rules, risk selection and pricing, available coverage, industry and regional issues and trends, demonstrated ability to work with agency distributors toward desired outcome; relationship building, mathematical ability required to properly equate exposure with premium and understand significance of management reports and actuarial reviews, demonstrated leadership and coaching ability, accountable, confident and self-directed with the ability to work independently and function as a team leader and a team player, strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate to a wide variety of personalities in one on one and group meetings and through formal presentations, ability to influence others to desired outcome, ability to cope with stressful situations, organizational skills and ability to handle tasks on a priority basis required to maintain consistent high quality and quantity of work, ability to provide direction to all underwriting staff within the respective assignment and to manage and monitor production within the underwriting teams, demonstrated proficiency in use of Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel, additional knowledge and skills as detailed in the Underwriting Skill Matrix.
