Job description

Position Description

DEFINITION:

To provide clinical instruction to students during patient treatment. Clinical sessions include a maximum of 20 hours per week to include daytime, evenings, and/or Saturdays.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives general supervision from Program Director, Dental Hygiene
  • May receive general supervision from full-time clinical faculty.
  • Exercises no supervision.

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

  • Provide laboratory and/or clinical instruction to students.
  • Review medical history with patients when necessary and provide medical referral to seek approval from the patient’s physician for treatment.
  • Evaluate patient dental charting and evaluate for necessary restorative work or other needs requiring dental referral.
  • Evaluate patient occlusion.
  • Evaluate and grade student performance on dental charting.
  • Evaluate radiographs for pathology and complete dental referral forms if necessary.
  • Administer local anesthesia to clinic patients as needed.
  • Instructor students on the administration of local anesthesia.
  • Serve as a resource person for oral pathology. Provide referral as needed. Assist the student in accurately recording pathological conditions on the dental record.
  • Provide occlusal adjustments of sealants as needed.
  • Document concise and accurate information on interactions with patients.
  • Provide assistance during medical emergencies.
  • Assist in other clinical assessments as needed.
  • Collaborate with lead course instructor on course development and assessment tools.
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area.
  • Provide feedback and remediation as necessary for dental hygiene students.
  • Attend monthly clinical faculty meetings.
  • Attend clinical calibration meetings.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • Professional skills, knowledge and attributes within clinical dentistry.
  • Current trends, research, and development in clinical dentistry.
  • Laboratory and clinical instructional techniques and procedures.
  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional techniques and procedures.
  • Dental software for record keeping.
  • Dental software for dental imaging.
  • Management of medical emergencies in the dental clinic.

Ability To:

  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations..
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully, both verbally and in writing
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:Making observationsReading and writingCommunicating with othersOperating assigned equipmentHandling varied tasks simultaneously
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:Standing or sitting for extended periods of timeOperating assigned equipmentHandling varied tasks simultaneously Bending, stooping, climbing, or lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Maintain mental capacity, which allow the capability of:Making sound decisionsResponding to questionsDemonstrating intellectual capabilities

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


Minimum Education/Training:

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD)
  • Evidence of academic preparation consistent with the American Dental Association Commission standards for accreditation. This includes documented background in educational methodology, techniques, and instruction or ability to complete within three months of hire date.

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum of three calendar years’ experience in clinical dentistry.

License/Training:

  • Current North Carolina Dental License.
  • Compliance with required immunizations.
  • Current OSHA training.
  • Current HIPAA training.
  • Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification.

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:

  • Teaching experiences in dental or dental hygiene at or above the program level.
