Job description

Transit Operator-A Grade A11

Come join our team! Prince George's County Government provides a dynamic and inclusive workplace where employees can thrive, learn, and grow across its 30 diverse agencies, all dedicated to serving the County's residents with essential resources and services. Nestled just minutes away from Washington, DC, Prince George's County combines urban vibrancy with serene surroundings, offering an ideal setting to live, work, and enjoy life. The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill a Transit Operator-A grade A11 position in the Office of Transportation/Senior Transportation.

This is skilled craft work involving the operation of commercial passenger vehicles, multi-passenger vans, and ancillary equipment (e.g., wheelchair lifts and two-way radios) to transport customers with special needs, including senior citizens and individuals with disabilities, to assigned destinations. Paratransit routes are primarily followed; however, fixed routes may be assigned as needed. Performance is evaluated based on the safe and efficient operation of vehicles, the safe transport of passengers, and the quality of customer service provided. The selected individual is expected to consistently demonstrate a professional, courteous, pleasant, and helpful demeanor when interacting with the public and must be able to maintain composure in stressful situations. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions with regular exposure to the elements. The position requires the ability to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 pounds on a regular basis and to wear and maintain the required uniform and personal protective or safety equipment. Physical requirements include the ability to sit, stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or operate objects, tools, and controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to safely operate light- to heavy-duty County vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) in excess of 26,000 pounds. Employees of the Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) are designated as Essential Employees and are required to participate in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program, respond during natural and human-caused disasters, and support special operations and activities as assigned. Essential employees are expected to report for duty or remain at work when other employees are granted Administrative Leave.

The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T's workforce keeps the County's various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.

  • Assists passengers boarding/disembarking when necessary.

  • Performs daily service/maintenance and maintains the cleanliness of vehicle exterior/interior throughout the shift.
