Seasonal Park Ranger I (Park Interpreter - Fluctuating Hours)

This position will support the Guadalupe River Complex (both Guadalupe River State Park and Honey Creek State Natural Area). Under the direction of the Park Assistant Superintendent, this position is responsible for assisting the Full-Time Park Interpreter in performing routine (journey level) state park operations work, including the interpretation and resource management of Guadalupe River State Park and Honey Creek State Natural Area. Assist Park Interpreter in providing demonstrations to the public by using a variety of both natural and cultural items, artifacts and/or replicas and conducts interpretive tours as needed. Assists in various assignments of both natural and cultural resource management which may include plant and animal analysis, inventory and management, research and sensitive site equipment. Assists in the implementation of outreach and educational programs for a variety of groups. Assists in operating and maintaining the park Discovery Center. Assists with volunteer recruitment and training. Prepares reports and assists with visitor registration, license sales and revenue collection. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

Note: Temporary position contingent upon funding with fluctuating full-time/part-time hours based on operational needs.

Minimum qualifications: Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree. Experience: No experience. Licensure: Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid state driver's license.

Preferred qualifications: Experience working with the public. Experience in park interpretation and continuing education programs. Experience in natural and/or cultural resource management.

Knowledge, skills and abilities: Knowledge of natural and cultural resources. Knowledge of special event implementation. Knowledge of facility, equipment and ground maintenance. Knowledge of basic mathematics. Knowledge of park operations and maintenance practices. Skill in effective verbal and written communication. Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner. Skill in using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts. Skill in planning, organizing and implementing public presentations and guided tours for various age groups. Skill in effective interpretive techniques, program preparation and presentations. Skill in the use of hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment. Ability to work as a member of a team. Ability to accurately handle cash and account for revenue collected. Ability to issue permits. Ability to work well with a variety of groups and age ranges. Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities. Ability to train others. Ability to survey customers for program quality. Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs. Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

Working conditions: Position contingent upon funding. Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use. Required to work 10 to 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Hours may be reduced or extended as needed. Required to adjust to changing schedules. Required to work overtime as necessary. This position may fluctuate between part-time and full-time status throughout the term of employment. Changing from part-time to full-time and vice versa may impact the amount of leave accrued and health insurance rates. Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions. Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs. Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays. May be required to operate a State vehicle.
