Public Works Technician I and II
The City of Colonial Heights is hiring for a Public Works Technician I and Public Works Technician II. These positions construct, maintain, and repair streets, roadways, drainage systems, storm sewers, water/wastewater lines and other facilities.
Applicants who possess a Class B Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement or higher level will be hired as Public Works Technician II.
Employees who obtain this licensure will be eligible for a promotion to Public Works Technician II after one full-year of employment.
Salary for Public Works Technician I: $35,360
Salary for Public Works Technician II: $37,440
The City of Colonial Heights will provide employees with the opportunity to obtain their CDL (Class B with Air Brake Endorsement), to include course enrollment, on the job training, and final DMV test.
Examples of duties include constructing, maintaining, and repairing streets, roadways, drainage systems, storm sewers, water/wastewater lines and other facilities; removing debris and blockages from streets and roadways; operating equipment and vehicles; establishing traffic safety zones while working; replacing existing meters and installing meters on new accounts; stocking crew truck with supplies; clearing trees and cutting grass as necessary; performing vegetation management and landscaping work, street repairs, concrete repairs, and utility repairs; performing leaf, snow, and ice removal; addressing public inquiries; and other duties as assigned.
Education and experience required include a high school diploma (or equivalent) and 1 to less than 3 years directly related experience. Must possess the ability to obtain and maintain required license as deemed necessary within specified period of time. Valid Virginia driver's license. Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening and criminal background check. A Commercial Driver's License is desirable.
Physical demands include frequent climbing, lifting of objects weighing in excess of 74 pounds, moving in areas of difficult or dangerous access. The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions.
