Position Summary
The Surgical Assistant supports the plastic surgeon during surgical procedures by maintaining strict sterile technique, assisting with exposure and tissue handling, and contributing to efficient, safe surgical flow. This role is essential in upholding accreditation standards, infection prevention, and optimal surgical outcomes.
Responsibilities:
Surgical Assistance & Sterile Technique
Assist the plastic surgeon during aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery procedures
Maintain strict adherence to sterile technique at all times
Perform surgical assistance duties including:
Retraction and exposure
Tissue handling
Suctioning and hemostasis support
Instrument handling within the sterile field
Anticipate surgeon needs while preserving sterility and workflow
Participate in accurate instrument, sponge, and sharps counts with the OR team
Patient Safety & Compliance
Assist with patient positioning, prepping, and draping
Follow AAAASF, AORN, CDC, OSHA, and facility protocols
Participate in time-outs and surgical safety checklists
Identify and report breaks in sterile technique immediately
Support emergency response protocols as required
OR Support & Team Collaboration
Work closely with the surgeon, RN circulator, CST, anesthesia provider, and sterile processing staff
Assist with maintaining a clean, organized sterile field
Support efficient OR turnover when appropriate
Uphold professionalism, confidentiality, and patient-centered care
Qualifications
Required
Documented experience assisting in plastic surgery or cosmetic surgical procedures
Strong knowledge of sterile technique and surgical asepsis
Familiarity with plastic surgery instruments and workflows
Excellent attention to detail and ability to anticipate surgical needs
Professional demeanor and strong teamwork skills
Preferred

Certification as a Surgical Assistant (CSFA, SA-C, or equivalent) or trained RN/CST with assistant experience
Experience in accredited or office-based surgical centers
BLS certification (ACLS a plus)
