Job description

Position Summary

Level I&II Under the supervision of the Assistant Recreation Manager -Aquatics, ensures patron safety and protection of lives at the City of St. George Aquatic facilities. May be required to act as receptionist for City aquatic facilities and be the first point of contact with the general public on a as needed basis. Level II Conducts swimming instruction using the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program.

Essential Functions/Typical Working/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Level I&II

  1. Prevents injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors.
  2. Ensures safety of staff and patrons at all times.
  3. Enforces facility rules and regulations.
  4. Recognizes and responds calmly, quickly and effectively to all emergencies, to your level of training.
  5. Administers first aid, ventilations, and/or CPR using rescue equipment.
  6. Alerts, in a safe manner, other life guards, facility staff, and management when more help or rescue equipment is needed.
  7. Completes records and reports as required.
  8. Performs maintenance and other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
  9. Inspects facility daily and reports any unsafe conditions or equipment to supervisor.
  10. Performs other related duties as required.
  11. Administers swim test to patrons.
  12. Attends scheduled meetings with management and staff.
  13. Wears appropriate uniform during assigned shift.
  14. Provide customer service in person and over the phone; answering questions and/or referring customers to appropriate staff members.

Additional Functions as needed

  1. Responds to public inquiries providing accurate information regarding recreation programs and services.
  2. Aids in the promotion and advertising of programs and special events
  3. Registers participants for programs, classes and activities
  4. General office and clerical duties
  5. Copies and prepares various brochures, flyers, schedules, rosters, etc. for distribution.
  6. Organizes, cleans, prepares and maintains recreation facilities and other work areas
  7. Works programs and special events
  8. Runs errands
  9. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing other related duties as needed
  10. Follow all city policies and procedures

Level II

  1. Ensures safety of the students at all times.
  2. Follows and teaches according to the Red Cross lesson standards. Creativity and different styles of teaching are permitted and encouraged as long as appropriate level skills are taught.
  3. Starts and ends classes according to established schedules which requires instructors to be available 15 minutes prior to scheduled class.
  4. Ensures that all equipment is out and ready prior to class start.
  5. Provides parents with updates, as requested, regarding child's progress.
  6. Instructs all lessons with safety first in a manner beneficial to students progression.
  7. Maintains accurate records of attendance and skill accomplishment which is completed after every class.
  8. Completes certificates prior to the final session of each class.
  9. Completes Course Records with American Red Cross.
  10. Required to be in water while teaching.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Conditions and temperatures may vary depending on the assignment. Requires the use of vision and/or hearing to identify and evaluate emergencies. Must be able to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies. Requires moderately heavy physical activity exerting 25-60 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Mental demands of intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior. Note: Must be available to work weekends, evenings, holidays, split shifts, and other schedules to help prepare for recreation offerings. This is a part-time position with variable hours averaging less than 28 hours per week over a period of twelve months.

Qualifications

Level I&II Customer service experience preferred but not required. Level II Minimum 6 month lifeguarding experience required. Licenses and/or Certifications: Level I&II American Red Cross Lifeguard certification must be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained throughout employment. Certification will need to be obtained before the employee can be scheduled to work as a lifeguard. (Employees will not be compensated for time spent obtaining certification.) American Red Cross Professional Rescuer First Aid/CPR/AED certification must be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained throughout employment. Certification will need to be obtained before the employee can be scheduled to work.(Employee will not be compensated for time spent obtaining certification.) Level II Must possess a valid driver license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment. Valid out-of-state drivers licenses may be accepted for active out-of-state students paying out-of-state tuition. Supporting documentation must be submitted to your supervisor each semester for approval. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification. Certification must be maintained throughout employment.

Skills: Highly motivated Dependable Customer service oriented Computer literate Ability to: Level I&II Follow Directions Perform Physical Labor Be Flexible Work with a team Maintain a professional demeanor at all times. Organize personal work duties. Level II Operate a motor vehicle safely Work independently Communicate effectively with children and youth

Benefits for part-time employees

Recreation Benefit Free access to all 4 city golf courses (Dixie Red Hills, Southgate, St. George Golf Club, and Sunbrook), swimming pools (City Pool and Sand Hollow Aquatic Center) and recreation center is available to all part-time employees.

Note: Golf course privileges are based on availability. Employees can book a tee-time within 24 hours or the same day, but may be turned away if there are no available tee-times. If you happen to be golfing with at least 2 paying customers; tee times can be set with more advance notice, but are still based on availability. Red Hills Golf Course will not be available to schedule tee times in advance --- walk on play based on availability only.
