Job description

Veterinary Assistant

Do you have a passion for animal welfare and a desire to be part of a team that changes lives every day?

At Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR), our mission is simple but powerful: HSPPR offers compassionate care to animals, supports safe communities, and provides socially conscious sheltering. As a Veterinary Assistant, you'll play a vital role in helping animals receive the medical care they need while supporting a team dedicated to improving the lives of pets and the people who love them.

Whether you're assisting with surgeries, providing hands-on patient care, administering medications, or helping animals recover and heal, your work will have a direct impact on thousands of animals each year.

As a Veterinary Assistant, you'll support our veterinarians and veterinary team by providing compassionate medical care and ensuring high standards of treatment for animals in our shelter and surgery programs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting veterinarians during examinations and treatments
  • Safely restraining and handling animals during medical procedures
  • Administering medications and treatments as directed
  • Calculating medication dosages accurately
  • Monitoring and communicating patient status and medical concerns
  • Assisting with surgical preparation, patient recovery, and post-operative care
  • Maintaining accurate medical records and entering data into shelter software
  • Cleaning kennels and providing daily animal care
  • Restocking medical and surgical supplies
  • Assisting with humane euthanasia procedures when necessary
  • Working collaboratively with shelter staff, volunteers, and other departments to support positive outcomes for animals

Successful candidates are:

  • Passionate about animal welfare and HSPPR's mission
  • Compassionate, patient, and professional when working with animals and people
  • Comfortable handling animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions
  • Detail-oriented and committed to maintaining accurate records
  • Able to prioritize tasks and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communicators who work well as part of a team

Required:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Ability to read, write, communicate effectively, perform basic math, and solve routine problems

Preferred:

  • Previous animal handling experience
  • Experience in a veterinary clinic, shelter, or animal care environment

This is an active, hands-on role that requires:

  • Standing and walking for extended periods
  • Frequent lifting and moving of animals and equipment weighing 25+ pounds and occasionally 40+ pounds
  • Working around animals, animal allergens, cleaning agents, and varying environmental conditions
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, and crouching

Full-time schedule

  • Regular schedule includes at least one weekend day
  • Occasional evening, holiday, and additional weekend work may be required based on organizational needs

At HSPPR, you're more than an employee-you're part of a mission-driven team dedicated to saving lives, strengthening the human-animal bond, and serving our community. Every day brings opportunities to make a meaningful impact through compassionate care, teamwork, and service.

If you're ready to combine your passion for animals with purposeful work, we'd love to hear from you.

Join us in creating a brighter future for animals and the people who care about them. Apply today!
