Job Summary This posting represents a multi-level posting. If this position is not filled by qualified applicants at the Transportation Specialist (TS) Level, the position will be filled at the Transportation Generalist Senior (TGS) Level. Transportation Specialist overview: Under limited supervision performs all tasks as the field survey crew chief to ensure field data is collected, processed in accordance with CAD standards and made available for the data users. To establish construction grades and lines and mark them properly with stakes or by creating a digital file for staking. To assist the land surveyor in researching land records and monuments for right of way boundary determination and PLS section corner perpetuation and restoration. Transportation Generalist Senior overview: This position exists to serve as a member of a field survey crew, performing location, construction and land surveys. The individual performs both manual labor and technical work as required to accomplish assigned survey tasks. The individual must also assist the survey crew chief in training and running the crew. This position’s responsibilities are 85% surveys & 15% snow and ice removal at an assigned truck station. Job Duties: Examples of work for this specific vacancy include but are not limited to: Sets up real time kinematic global position systems or total station. Performs data comparison from real time kinematic global position systems or total station. Assists survey lead in construction survey office activities. Performs set-up, calibration, use and maintenance of survey equipment. Assists survey lead in field construction by creating and/or checking survey notes, recovering or establishing horizontal and vertical control, setting and marking stakes, and pounding hubs or setting right of way. Sets up and operates global positioning systems. Assists with investigation and location of lot corners, monuments and section corners. Performs snow & ice activities such as maintaining roadways and preparing & inspecting winter equipment. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications For the Transportation Specialist level: Licensure: Must have a valid driver's license. Experience: Four years of experience performing surveys (e.g., land, location, construction, and/or geodetic control surveys, etc.), mapping or related activities. OR Three years of experience performing surveys (e.g., land, location, construction, and/or geodetic control surveys, etc.), mapping or related activities plus a combination of one year of experience performing roadway inspection, design or related activities. Education Substitution: A two-year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four-year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts.) Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records. If this position is not filled at the Transportation Specialist level, it will be filled at the Transportation Generalist Senior level using the following qualifications. For the Transportation Generalist Senior level: Licensure: Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with no Air Brake restriction within 6 months of initial placement into the position, permit within 3 months. Experience: Two years performing surveys (e.g., land, location, construction, and/or geodetic control surveys, etc.), mapping or related activities. OR One year of experience performing survey (e.g., land, location, construction, and/or geodetic control surveys, etc.), mapping or related activities; AND one year experience in performing roadway inspection, design or related activities. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work outside, exposed to the weather (both hot & cold) on a daily basis. The employee will frequently drive a motor vehicle in off-road conditions. Frequently, the employee will walk on uneven/sloping ground. The employee may work in high volume traffic zones in day and night time conditions. The employee must frequently and continually rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, & squatting). The employee will operate machinery and equipment (using vision & hearing) under varying temperatures. The employee will frequently lift in the moderate 40-50 pound range and infrequently lift up into the 75 pound range. The employee must wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility and feet from injury. The employee will operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment such as a snow plow/sander. Additional Requirements The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called. This position requires successful completion of the following background checks: SEMA4 Records Check Criminal History Check Employment Reference Check Driver's License Check The position (TGS only) must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's license (CDL) within 6 months of hire. Once the CDL permit is obtained, they must submit to a Federal Department of Transportation drug test (with negative test results), be subject to future random drug and alcohol testing and be registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. A revoked, suspended or canceled Driver's License within the last 5 years may disqualify a candidate or three serious traffic violations during any 12 month period of time will disqualify a candidate.
