Potomac St., Centennial, CO, 80112 Job Type: Hourly Full‑Time Posting Date: 04/15/2026 Closing Date: 08/02/2026 Overview The position is for a Deputy Sheriff who will complete the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Academy and serve in the Detention Facility. Responsibilities include enforcing laws, maintaining security, performing booking and prisoner care, and supporting transit of inmates. The role provides a pathway to future patrol assignments after a one‑year Detention Facility assignment. Responsibilities Attend and obtain certification from a sponsored P.O.S.T. Academy. Learn federal law, Colorado statutes, and criminal procedure. Acquire skills in defensive tactics, restraints, and use‑of‑force techniques, including firearms and de‑escalation. Perform routine patrol duties to prevent, detect, and respond to suspicious or illegal activity. Operate an emergency vehicle under normal, emergency, pursuit, and hazardous weather conditions. Respond to calls for service on an emergency or non‑emergency basis. Conduct initial investigations of crime scenes and incidents. Interview witnesses, victims, participants, or suspects at the scene. Collect and preserve evidence and property. Arrest suspects in misdemeanor/felony activity and write citations for minor violations. Prepare reports, forms, and documents related to law‑enforcement activities. Provide testimony as a witness or complainant in court. Offer assistance, direction, and support to persons in need during emergencies. Commit to safety laws, Sheriff’s Office policies, and report safety violations. Maintain acceptable attendance and availability for overtime, weekends, and holidays. Adhere to the mission, values, principles, code of conduct, and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office. Interact effectively with others and exercise good judgment in sensitive situations. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of agency policies, procedures, and methods. Proficiency in firearms usage. Capacity to safely operate a county vehicle in all conditions. Ability to use related office and field equipment. Computer skills as required. Understanding of community policing concepts. Completion of mandatory training. Ability to act with tact and impartiality. Reading, learning, and understanding applicable federal, state, and local laws. Response to emergency or threatening situations in line with law and policy. Self‑protection and protection of others. Physical ability to subdue and control unruly individuals. Sound reasoning and decision‑making. No significant threat to self or others. Good interpersonal relationships with superiors, coworkers, suspects, officials, and the public. Pass annual physical testing. Effective verbal and written communication in English. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or G.E.D. No specific work experience required; any combination of education and experience acceptable per the Sheriff’s discretion. College coursework in criminal justice (preferred). Required Special Requirements Valid driver’s license; must obtain a Colorado license. Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Current CPR and First Aid certifications within the initial status period. Completion of a Colorado P.O.S.T. Academy and certification. Minimum age of 21 at certification. Legal possession of a handgun. Physical Demands 60% sitting, 40% standing, walking, or running in field or office. Strength to carry a human (~150 lbs). Frequent pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling. Physical capability to restrain a combative subject. Auditory and visual capacities for communication and detection of suspicious activity. Fine and gross motor skills for firearm and equipment use. Color vision for identification of vehicles, suspects, or victims. Olfactory capability to detect hazardous situations.
