Transportation Safety Coordinator

Position: Transportation Safety Coordinator

Exempt Status: Non-Exempt

Number Of Days: 226

Pay Grade: Aux PG 8

Department: Transportation

Reports To: Director of Transportation

Supervises: As Assigned

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: At least three years of school transportation experience. One-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Position Function/Purpose: Coordinate, and conduct training for all CDL drivers, transportation staff, and district vehicle operators per state, federal, and district regulations. Ensure safety, training, and endorsement requirements are current and compliant with federal, state, and district requirements; accident investigation, documentation, and review committee.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develops, plans, coordinates, and conducts classroom and/or on-the-road training, retraining, and in-service training for drivers, driver assistants, van driver assistants, van drivers, staff, and mechanics
  • Evaluates driver/trainers and other instructors (e.g., first aid, C.P.R., student safety program) in conducting their duties to include: driver evaluations, evacuation, drills, training courses, first aid and C.P.R. classes, student safety programs, street safety surveys, bus stop and route surveys, and route monitoring. Supervises drivers and other transportation employees in safety aspects and in regular operating duties.
  • Supervises, coordinates, and conducts office procedures and maintenance of staff training records, licensing/permits programs (districtwide) and accident review committee, worker compensation reports, student injury, M.V.R. reports (districtwide), and red-light violations to meet with local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Supervises department of transportation and commercial driver's license compliance (districtwide).
  • Develops, plans, and coordinates employee safety award programscompiles/edits newsletter.
  • Develops and promotes good community relations among various community and school clientele.
  • Represents department at a variety of in-district, public and private sector meetings, conferences and seminars.
  • Develops, plans, coordinates and conducts state and federal license examinations, both written and practical, employee evaluations, evacuation drills, student safety programs, street safety surveys, bus stop and route surveys, and route monitoring. District liaison for Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance of drug/alcohol testing.
  • Assists in developing, coordinating, and implementing emergency procedures; including school closures, accident reporting, investigation and documentation, and personnel injuries.
  • Evaluates and resolves problems with employees, students, parents, schools, and community, and provides on-site correction of such problems.
  • Coordinate all levels of student management for transportation. Maintain student misconduct reports in the student information system and file copies. Ensure safety of bus stops and loading zones.
  • Evaluates the need for crossing guards using street safety surveys. Oversees hiring and employment management of all crossing guards. Evaluates crossing guards' performance.
  • Maintains all driver qualification files, training files and all other database systems as required by state law and district policy.
  • Responds to accidents and occupational injuries, conducts comprehensive investigations, photographs events and completes accident and injury report(s) as required.
  • Coordinate training for Emergency Drivers and Defensive Driving for white-fleet drivers.
  • Construct and maintain a school bus road-e-o course and serve as participant and/or trainer for annual competitions.
  • Occasionally drives school buses and other District vehicles in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Education/Certification: Minimum of High School Diploma required
  • Acquire and/or maintain Specialist level certification or greater through Texas Association for Pupil Transportation (TAPT Trainer preferred)
  • Must pass DOT physicals and alcohol/drug tests
  • Acceptable driving record in accordance with DPS standards
  • Acceptable criminal history record
  • Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate or a valid Enrollment Certificate Completion (within six months) of TEEX Train the Trainer class
  • Class B CDL P(Passenger) S(School Bus) Endorsement Mandatory

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Good computer skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively
  • Knowledge of student discipline procedures and ability to manage student behavior
  • Ability to safely operate a school bus
  • Effective telephone and communications skills
  • Working knowledge of office equipment, such as copiers, scanners, fax, and computers
  • Knowledge of multi-line phone system
  • Proficient map reading skills
  • Ability to maintain good relationship with Grapevine-Colleyville ISD staff (supervisors, fellow employees, coaches, principals, etc.) and ensure positive interactions with all patrons and public
  • Flexible and open to changes
  • Detail oriented
  • Maintain an orderly work environment
  • Conduct accident retraining
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality

Work Environment: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control. Sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions; pushing, pulling, moderate lifting. Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes. Ability to lift or drag 25-40 pounds in an emergency.
