Job description

Pathology Technician II (Cytology Emphasis) The Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (AZVDL) with the University of Arizona, is seeking a Pathology Technician II (Cytology Emphasis). This onsite position provides technician support to clinical pathology services, primarily focused on cytology. The incumbent will also provide back up support to other pathology services including necropsy lab operations and digital pathology as needed and may encompass additional training in other lab services. The Pathology Technician II (Cytology Emphasis) performs routine and complex cytological specimen preparations, working closely with pathologists to maintain rapid turnaround. The incumbent will be responsible for preparing cytological specimens following established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and regulatory standards, preparing reagents, maintaining instrumentation, and documenting testing activities. In addition, assisting with quality assurance processes and maintaining compliance with federal and state program requirements. The Pathology Technician II (Cytology Emphasis) will also support laboratory veterinary teaching duties and general pathology section lab services. The incumbent will work under moderate guidance with increasing independence as proficiency is demonstrated. Work is performed in BSL-2/BSL+2 laboratory environments. Strict adherence to biosafety, biosecurity, regulatory, and quality management requirements is essential. The AZVDL is committed to excellence in diagnostic service, animal disease surveillance, being an active member of a laboratory network safeguarding against foreign and emerging animal disease and providing expertise to the veterinary community of Arizona. In 2002 the AZVDL was one of the first laboratories to be approved as a Participant Laboratory of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) to conduct testing in support of APHIS and the National Veterinary Service Laboratory. We continue to embrace being a part of this valuable contribution as our part of institutional excellence. The AZVDL provides accurate and timely diagnostic assistance in animal health to veterinarians, animal owners, university researchers, and state and federal agencies. The submission of specimens through practicing veterinarians is encouraged, but specimens are also accepted from owners. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Duties & Responsibilities Perform cytological specimen preparation including staining, labeling, microprotein analysis, fluid analysis, and cell counts. Troubleshoots technical issues and recommends procedural improvements to leadership. Perform pathology technical support tasks including necropsy lab maintenance/preparations, digital pathology slide scanning, specimen receiving and accessioning duties and other section support tasks. Maintain accurate, detailed, and traceable records of all testing activities. Organize, analyze, and prepare data for laboratory information management systems (LIMS). Database entry, reporting, and long‑term archiving. Maintain thorough and reliable records to ensure data integrity and regulatory compliance. Maintain proficiency in assigned testing platforms and support laboratory quality systems through adherence to quality assurance, regulatory, and accreditation requirements. Participate in continuous quality improvement activities and contribute to the development, validation, implementation, and optimization of diagnostic assays and testing methodologies. Accurately and consistently perform laboratory procedures. Support equipment life‑cycle management including preventative maintenance (PM), calibration coordination, troubleshooting, documentation, and service vendor communication to ensure operational readiness and compliance. Perform routine administrative and laboratory support functions including quality control monitoring, reagent and solution preparation, inventory tracking, and proper biological and chemical waste disposal in accordance with biosafety and environmental regulations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong attention to detail. Demonstrated reliability, follow‑through, and adaptability in a dynamic laboratory environment. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while contributing a positive and professional attitude. Skilled in applying aseptic techniques, laboratory safety protocols, and quality assurance practices. Ability to apply and adhere to SOPs, regulatory requirements, and quality management systems. Knowledge of and competence with laboratory information systems and general computer applications for data management and reporting. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required. Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Compensation Rate of Pay: $20.33 - $25.41 hourly. The Rate of Pay field represents the University of Arizona's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
