Corrections Officer (Certified & Trainee) - Corrections Division

Certified Corrections Officer (County of Volusia) Position located in Daytona Beach, Florida. Provide custody, control, care and general welfare of inmates detained in the County Correctional Facilities. Salary Annual minimum: $55,001 (does not include overtime or holiday pay). Starting base: $24.67 per hour. Experience Levels 1–4 years of verified full‑time experience: 2% above minimum. 4–6 years of verified full‑time experience: 4% above minimum. 7+ years of verified full‑time experience: 6% above minimum. Hours Rotating 12‑hour shifts every six months, including weekends and holidays (6:00 am – 6:00 pm / 6:00 pm – 6:00 am). Responsibilities Admit and release persons committed to the County correctional facilities. Place inmates under confinement in cells or other jail areas as directed, and care for them as long as they are confined therein. Maintain good order and conduct, and be responsible for the care, general welfare, and feeding of inmates. Maintain the area of assigned responsibility in a clean, sanitary, and orderly manner. Assign and direct inmates to work details as required. Patrol cell blocks and take periodic counts of inmates. Exercise reasonable care or action in handling special or unusual inmates or emergency situations. Check inmates and cell areas for contraband, escape attempts, unauthorized articles, weapons, etc. Be held accountable for tools and equipment of the area of responsibility. Perform thorough search and removal of unauthorized personal articles and contraband. Perform clerical duties related to receipt and release of inmates. May be assigned to other county locations based on operational needs. Attend work on a regular and consistent basis. Adhere to Federal, State, County, and local ordinances. Respond to emergency situations. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. Possession of a current Corrections Certification issued by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. United States Citizen; must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Valid driver's license at time of appointment; must have a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days of appointment and maintain thereafter. Must have passed the CJ‑BAT. Corrections Officer Trainee Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. United States Citizen; must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Valid driver's license at time of appointment; a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days of appointment. Must have passed the CJ‑BAT or: Candidate must take the CJ‑BAT and obtain a passing score within seventy‑five (75) days of invitation to an interview. Additional Requirements A pre‑employment and annual physical abilities test is required. The test battery will assess balance, muscular endurance, strength, flexibility, anaerobic power, fine motor skill, aerobic power, and includes specific field tests such as 220‑yard runs, obstacle jumps, wall climbs, sprints, and lock‑turning. Total duration is 6½ minutes. Nicotine screening is performed; those who fail may be eligible if they quit within one year of hire, bearing the cost of cessation program. Emergency activations: position is mission essential and must be available for on‑call duty during emergencies. Knowledge & Skills Understanding of attitudes and behavior patterns of restrained persons. Knowledge of penal rules, regulations, and procedures governing confinement and release. Record keeping and reporting. Effective relationships with associates, law enforcement, and the public. Effective oral and written communication. Ability to work under stressful conditions. Ability to relocate to other county locations based on operational need. Physical & Mental Requirements Mechanical and mental demands include reading and comprehending technical materials, basic mathematics, rule application, clear communication, and analysis of situations. Physical demands include lifting up to 150 pounds, running, walking, carrying, and other tasks as described. Environmental demands include exposure to confined spaces, heights, variable weather, and possible chemical or waste exposure.
