2026 Police Lieutenant (1YP) – Statewide, MA Location: Statewide, MA Exam Date: September 14, 2026 Duties Under supervision, perform the duties of a Police Lieutenant in conformance with the rules and regulations of the Police Department. Perform all duties assigned by a higher rank up to the Chief of Police in every phase of police work. Perform related work as required. Eligibility To be eligible for this examination you must be an employee in a Massachusetts Police Department with permanent civil service status in one of the following titles by the date of the examination: Brockton – Police Sergeant Cambridge – Police Sergeant Ludlow – Police Sergeant Middleborough – Police Sergeant Newton – Police Sergeant Shrewsbury – Police Sergeant Springfield – Police Sergeant Wakefield – Police Sergeant Waltham – Police Sergeant Additionally you must have served in the force for at least one year in the eligible title and performed the job duties of that title. (If the eligible title has been lowered to the entry level rank, you must have served in the force for at least one year or three years depending on the participating municipality.) Examination Requirements Examination Weights: 52% Technical Knowledge, 28% Situational Judgment Test, 20% Experience & Education. Written Examination: Tests knowledge of U.S. and Massachusetts constitutional law, Massachusetts General Laws, Federal, State and Local Rules and Regulations, local ordinances, community policing principles, police supervision practices, and other relevant knowledge. It also assesses Judgment and Decision‑Making, Accountability, Adaptability, Guiding and Developing Others, Leadership, and Interpersonal Skills. Experience & Education All candidates must complete the 2026 Statewide Police Lieutenant Promotional Examination E&E Claim application online. The E&E claim requires evidence of relevant experience and education; submission through the online claim process is mandatory. Statutory Preference Points Qualified Veterans, Disabled Veterans, or individuals with 25 years of service in a regular municipal police force may receive up to two preference points added to their overall examination score.
