Position Overview The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is seeking current peace officers for the Deputy Sheriff (Lateral) position. Deputy Sheriffs facilitate community interaction, conduct investigations, patrol assigned areas, supervise and transport inmates, act as bailiff or civil deputy, and perform all related duties under general supervision. Qualifications Certificate: A valid California Basic POST Certificate. (Current full‑time peace officers of a POST‑participating agency who have completed the Basic Course and probationary period.) Education: High school diploma or equivalent. License: Valid California Class C Driver License or equivalent. Background: No felony convictions and no recent drug use. Physical Requirements: Free from conditions that impair fitness; uncorrected visual acuity at least 20/100, correctable to 20/30; weight proportional to height. Other Requirements: Willingness to work irregular hours, holidays, weekends, rotating shifts; no use of tobacco products for employees hired after October 1, 2004. Responsibilities Deputy Sheriffs engage in community interaction and collaborative problem‑solving, investigate crimes, patrol assigned areas, receive, supervise, and transport inmates, act as bailiff or civil deputy, and perform all related law‑enforcement duties as assigned. The selection process includes a psychological evaluation, polygraph test, medical examination, and final interviews.
