EV Chargers & Parking Operations Technician

In order to be considered for this position candidate must be serving permanently in the title of Engineering Technician, or reachable on civil service list for Exam #2040 or 5068. Parking Management, Facilities, and Capital Projects Unit plays a vital role in the development, management, and operation of the City’s municipal parking infrastructure as well as sustainability initiatives at parking facilities. The unit is responsible for managing 8 multi‑level parking garages and 30 municipal parking fields across the city. Our mission is to integrate sustainability practices and environmental safety into municipal parking facilities. The Facilities Management & Sustainability Projects Group is seeking a detail‑oriented and highly motivated Engineering Technician to assist in advancing the City’s EV charging infrastructure and supporting key operational functions of municipal parking facilities. The selected candidate will play a vital role in both the planning and operational oversight of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, the general upkeep and inspection of parking structures, and the design of parking layouts and traffic devices. This position requires a combination of fieldwork, technical design support, data analysis, and vendor coordination. The selected candidate will be tasked with the following: Support the implementation of the citywide EV charging strategy by assisting with the installation, maintenance, and operational oversight of Level 2 and fast‑charging stations. Conduct site visits and field surveys of parking facilities, collect relevant data, generate maps, visualizations, and field reports. Assist with inspections of parking garages and fields to ensure public safety and contract compliance. Design parking layout and traffic equipment arrangements using AutoCAD and prepare/review technical drawings and specifications. Support the preparation and review of engineering documentation, including proposals, contracts, cost estimates, and maintenance plans. Investigate and respond to complaints submitted through 311, the Commissioner’s office, elected officials, or directly from the public. Collaborate with vendors and internal teams to monitor EV charger functionality, track operational performance, and ensure prompt issue resolution. Perform additional administrative, analytical, and technical support tasks as needed. “This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed to between the City and DC37.” Work Location: 34‑02 Queens Boulevard, Long Island City, NY 11101 Hours/Shift: 35 Hrs. / M‑F / 7 am – 3 pm ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN - 20113 Minimum Qualifications For Assignment Levels I – II A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a state’s department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and two years of full‑time satisfactory experience as an engineering technician; or An Associate degree from an accredited college or technical institution with a specialization in engineering technology; or A combination of education and experience which is equivalent to two years of satisfactory experience. To determine educational equivalency for experience, see “Special Note” below. Special Note One year of experience credit will be given for each 30 semester credits for college education leading to a degree from an accredited college in engineering technology. However, all candidates must have at least a high school diploma or its educational equivalent. License Requirement For Certain Positions For assignment to certain positions, the candidate must possess at the time of appointment or assignment a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment. Additional Qualification Requirements To be eligible for placement in Assignment Levels III and IV, individuals must have, after meeting the requirements for Assignment Levels I and II, either: At least one year of satisfactory service as an Engineering Technician with the City of New York; or A Baccalaureate degree in engineering technology from an accredited college; or After meeting the minimum requirements described for Assignment Level I, at least two additional years of full‑time satisfactory experience performing engineering technician work; or A satisfactory combination of education and experience equivalent to (see Special Note). Additional Qualification Requirement “3” above and in “Special Note” above. Preferred Skills Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar drafting software for design and layout work. Experience working with EV charging equipment or related infrastructure is a strong plus. Understanding of parking design standards, traffic flow, and facility safety considerations. Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), with the ability to clearly document findings and collaborate across disciplines. Ability to work independently and in field conditions.
