Head Softball Coach Patrick & Henry Community College seeks a motivated, student‑focused, and energetic individual to serve as Adjunct Head Softball Coach. Purpose of the Position The Head Softball Coach is responsible for all aspects of operating and leading the NJCAA softball program, including recruiting, player development, practice and game management, academic support, fundraising, community engagement, and compliance with NJCAA, Region 10, Virginia Community College System (VCCS), and college policies. The successful candidate will foster academic achievement, athletic excellence, leadership development, and sportsmanship while supporting the mission and values of the college. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Program Administration and Leadership Provide leadership and direction for all aspects of the softball program. Develop and implement a competitive program that emphasizes student‑athlete success both academically and athletically. Establish team expectations, conduct standards, and accountability measures. Promote good sportsmanship, character, and leadership among student‑athletes. Recruiting and Student‑Athlete Development Recruit qualified student‑athletes who can be successful in the classroom and on the field. Build and maintain relationships with high school, travel softball, and community coaches. Assist prospective student‑athletes through the admissions, enrollment, and financial aid processes. Support retention efforts and encourage student‑athletes to successfully complete their academic programs. Coaching Responsibilities Plan, organize, and conduct practices, conditioning sessions, and competitions. Develop game strategies and evaluate individual and team performance. Coordinate and supervise team travel and related activities. Monitor the physical and mental well‑being of student‑athletes. Academic Monitoring Encourage academic excellence and monitor student‑athlete academic progress. Communicate regularly with faculty, advisors, and support staff regarding student‑athlete success. Promote class attendance, persistence, and graduation. Compliance and Risk Management Ensure compliance with NJCAA, Region 10, VCCS, and college rules and regulations. Monitor eligibility requirements and maintain required documentation. Complete all required reports, certifications, and training. Promote a safe environment for student‑athletes and spectators. Community Engagement and Fundraising Assist with fundraising activities and special events supporting the softball program. Represent the college positively within the local community. Coordinate youth camps, clinics, and outreach opportunities to increase program visibility and recruitment efforts. Equipment and Facilities Maintain inventories of softball equipment, uniforms, and supplies. Assist with field preparation and ensure athletic facilities are properly maintained and secured. Submit equipment and budget requests as appropriate. Required Qualifications Coaching experience in softball at the high school, travel, recreational, collegiate, or professional level. Demonstrated ability to recruit, mentor, and develop student‑athletes. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel as required. Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. CPR, AED, and First Aid certification. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of softball fundamentals, player development, and game strategy. Ability to mentor and motivate student‑athletes from diverse backgrounds. Strong organizational and time‑management skills. Ability to build positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members. Commitment to student success, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Physical requirements: ability to actively participate in practices, stand, walk, bend, lift up to 50 pounds, and travel for away contests and recruiting activities. Special Requirements The selected candidate must successfully complete a criminal background check and any other employment‑related screenings required by the college.
