Seafood Manager

Responsibilities Provides direct leadership to seafood department crew members including planning and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, coaching sessions, administering discipline, providing training and development opportunities, rewarding crew members, addressing complaints, and resolving problems. Actively participates, trains, and mentors crew members to enthusiastically demonstrate, educate, and sell fresh seafood, service meat, and chef express products. Manages the training process for all new crew members through the probationary period, including completion of onboarding activities and department-specific training videos on the in‑house LMS, and submits required documentation to Human Resources (Fresh Sheets and New Hire Training Guides). Conducts daily team huddles during each shift to communicate sales goals and reinforce guest service expectations. Writes and places orders for all ingredients, products, and supplies; checks in items when loaded, and dates, stocks, and organizes dry storage, freezers, and coolers. Prepares seafood, service meat, and chef express products for sale by filleting, wrapping, and pricing them according to established department and company policies and procedures. Writes daily plans and weekly work schedules that anticipate business needs. Ensures execution of all seafood programs and corporate promotions at the store level by working directly with the Seafood Sales Manager on product selection and mix. Controls and maintains inventory following FIFO principles to achieve consistent margin. Responsible for rotation of merchandise and maintenance of displays to ensure products meet the freshness guarantee at all times. Coordinates validation, item authorization, sign making, and all POS maintenance related to the seafood department. Ensures all displays are properly stocked. Maintains accurate records for damaged or spoiled merchandise in accordance with company policies and procedures. Complies with all food and workplace safety rules and regulations and ensures safety, cleanliness, and sanitation of the work area and equipment. Works towards acquiring product knowledge across all departments to respond to guest questions and provide informative product information. Stays updated on weekly specials, coupons, and other company promotions to create an environment that delights guests. Works in and cultivates a team‑oriented work environment that inspires collaboration and cooperation. Store is open seven days a week and may require weekend, holiday, and shift work. Qualifications 2 years of department operations experience or equivalent education to understand the nature of every position within the department. Knowledge of fundamental management concepts, practices, and procedures related to food service, merchandising, and retail operations. Ability to learn basic knowledge of all products carried in the department, including willingness to taste and evaluate seafood, chef express, beef, pork, and poultry products. Ability to follow instructions and procedures for proper handling of knives and other cutting equipment. Strong work ethic with effective time‑management skills. Ability to comprehend, interpret, and analyze instructions, correspondence, government regulations, financial reports, legal documents, packing lists, manifests, pick sheets/fulfillment orders, inventory count sheets, and movement/volume reports. Proven success with mentoring, motivating, and leading a team. Math skills necessary for adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, following recipes, calculating gross margins, markup, percentages, analyzing variance, completing reports, budgeting labor and sales, executing sales transactions, and calculating discounts. Ability to use Microsoft Office suite. Excellent communicator able to professionally and courteously interact with guests, crew members, store management, corporate sales managers, and leadership, including answering telephone calls and using the in‑store intercom system. Ability to work with cleaning chemicals and detergents and with food ingredients, produce, and spices without allergic reaction. Must be at least 18 years of age due to equipment use and work environment. Current State Food Handler’s Permit must be maintained. Work Environment Work space will be primarily in an open department with a sales counter and preparation area, exposing employees to ice or wet areas, as well as freezers and refrigerated areas. Will be required to join a labor union. Physical activity: lifting 25–50 lbs. routinely, standing, walking, bending, twisting, reaching, fingering, pushing/pulling, sitting. Tools and Equipment Knives, wrapper, box knife, seafood scale, label machine, computer, printer, telephone, shopping cart, garbage compactor, bailer, pallet jack, flat bed, hand truck, ladder, calculator, mop, broom, floor squeegee. Cleaning supplies: hand soap, hand sanitizer, glass and multi‑surface cleaner, floor degreaser, bio‑shield drain treatment, food grade lubricant, quaternary sanitizer. Personal Protective Equipment: cut‑resistant gloves, heavy cotton gloves. Pay Transparency Starting rates will be no less than the local minimum wage and may vary based on location, experience, and qualifications. The pay range is $17.38 to $25.30 per hour. Benefits may include medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance; sick pay (accrued based on hours worked); PTO/Vacation Pay (accrued based on hours worked); paid holidays (8–9 days annually); bereavement pay; and retirement benefits (pension and/or 401(k) eligibility).
