Occupational Safety & Industrial Hygiene Specialist Job Summary As the subject matter expert in occupational safety and industrial hygiene, you will partner with faculty, staff, and campus departments to identify workplace hazards and develop practical solutions. Your work will support initiatives such as indoor air quality, respiratory protection, ergonomics, exposure assessments, medical surveillance, and safety training, ensuring a culture of health, safety, and well‑being across the campus. Key Responsibilities Coordinate occupational safety and industrial hygiene programs, including indoor air quality, respiratory protection, ergonomics, and medical surveillance. Conduct workplace hazard assessments, inspections, and exposure evaluations. Recommend practical safety solutions and provide technical guidance that supports regulatory compliance and a prevention culture. Support hazardous waste activities and collaborate with consultants, contractors, and campus partners on environmental health and safety initiatives. Key Qualifications In-depth knowledge of industrial hygiene principles, exposure assessment methodologies, and occupational health hazard evaluation. Experience conducting complex industrial hygiene investigations, exposure assessments, indoor air quality evaluations, ergonomic assessments, mold and asbestos evaluations, and job hazard analyses. Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate occupational health hazards and develop practical recommendations to reduce risk. Experience administering respiratory protection and medical surveillance program activities. Experience developing and delivering occupational safety and industrial hygiene training for diverse campus audiences using classroom and online learning platforms. Proficiency with industrial hygiene sampling equipment, direct‑reading instruments, and environmental health and safety software applications. Preferred Professional certification (CIH, ASP, CSP, or equivalent). Experience in higher education, research, healthcare, or a similarly regulated institutional environment. Experience performing industrial hygiene exposure monitoring with direct‑reading instruments and air sampling methods. Experience supporting laboratory, facilities, maintenance, or construction safety operations. Experience managing indoor air quality investigations involving water intrusion, mold, asbestos, or other indoor environmental quality concerns. Experience using environmental health and safety information management systems and learning management systems. Licenses / Certifications Required AHERA Asbestos Building Inspector (may be obtained within one year of employment) 40HR HAZWOPER CA Title 22 Compensation and Benefits Salary is based on experience, education, and qualifications, within the department’s budget and equity guidelines. CSU Classification Salary Range: $6,668 – $9,714 per month; hiring salary not expected to exceed $6,668 per month. Generous Time Off: 15 paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave.
